Chapter 2: You Really Know How to Gain Sympathy
I didn’t catch what else Jiang Mingzhe said, as I drifted off to sleep feeling exhausted.
When I woke again, both Jiang Mingzhe and Jiang Ruohe were in the hospital room.
“Xiao Wan, you’re awake,” Jiang Mingzhe looked at me with a kind expression.
“Grandfather,” I called out weakly.
“Ruohe, come apologize to your wife,” Jiang Mingzhe urged the person behind him.
That person glanced at me indifferently, his eyes filled with unmistakable disgust, but still uttered without warmth that he hadn’t known his own strength, causing me to miscarry.
I gave him a cold look and turned my gaze away, a trace of mockery flashing in my eyes. What did he mean by not knowing his own strength? If he could have, he probably wished he could have been even rougher.
Trembling, I reached under the covers and touched my abdomen, sighing inwardly. Maybe it was for the best. If the child had really come into this world with parents like us, it would have been a tragedy.
Jiang Mingzhe kept comforting me, saying that after I recovered for a while, we could try for another child. At the mention of children, the old man became somewhat emotional and turned to scold Jiang Ruohe right in front of me.
Soon after, Jiang Mingzhe received a phone call and looked at me apologetically, saying he had to return to the company. He also told Jiang Ruohe to take a week off to take good care of me.
As he was leaving, Jiang Mingzhe looked at Jiang Ruohe once more.
“I happen to have an executive position open in Africa. If you don’t want to go, you’d better take good care of her,” Jiang Mingzhe glared at him. “If you dare hurt Xiao Wan again, you’ll see how I deal with you!”
The door slammed shut. Jiang Ruohe walked over and sat down by my hospital bed, looking at me with scorn.
“You really know how to gain Grandfather’s sympathy.”
I turned my head and glared angrily at Jiang Ruohe. I wanted to say, don’t think of people as so despicable, but what would be the point? He always had a way of tearing people down completely.
There was nothing to say to him anyway. Although the child had come at the wrong time, it was still my own flesh and blood. My mind was in turmoil, and I felt extremely agitated! Just as I was about to pull up the covers and sleep, Jiang Ruohe stopped me.
“What, you think I’m wrong? Don’t you think it’s fair now that you’ve had a miscarriage too?”
“Jiang Ruohe, are you fucking insane?” I shook off his hand and glared at him.
Probably because he had never seen me resist before, Jiang Ruohe looked momentarily stunned, then his expression turned icy.
“If you want to think of me as that kind of person, then that’s what I am. Suit yourself. If you’re done talking, I want to rest now. You can get out.” I didn’t give him a chance to speak, quickly cutting him off.
“Yu Xiaowan.” Jiang Ruohe gritted his teeth as he said my name.
Just then, the hospital door handle turned. Jiang Ruohe hurriedly picked up a bowl of chicken soup from beside the bed.
“Darling, drink this quickly.” His voice was nauseatingly gentle.
“Son.”
When Jiang Ruohe saw that it was his mother Wang Yingzhi who had opened the door, not Jiang Mingzhe, he immediately put the bowl of soup back in disgust.
“Yu Xiaowan, what’s your problem? If you were pregnant, you shouldn’t have been so shamelessly seducing Ruohe! And now, Dad has taken his anger out on me… Did you do this on purpose?” Wang Yingzhi looked at me accusingly.
Seeing the same disgust on my mother-in-law’s face as I saw in Jiang Ruohe’s, a bitter feeling flashed through my eyes. What could I even say?
“I’ll take care of her. You go check on Minwei. I just called her, and she said she’s at the hospital. When I asked her what was wrong, she wouldn’t say.”
“She had a miscarriage,” Jiang Ruohe stared coldly at me.
“Ah, how did Minwei have a miscarriage?”
Seeing Jiang Ruohe’s expression as he looked at me, Wang Yingzhi instantly realized this matter was connected to me. She reached out and picked up that bowl of chicken soup, splashing it directly toward my face.
