Pretending to have just woken up, he yawned as he opened the door.
As soon as the door opened, a group of people saw Yun tide, and Zhao Mei froze on the spot.
“How are you—”
She quickly shut her mouth. She had just searched the house and confirmed Yunxi hadn’t secretly come back, so how was she suddenly walking out of the room now?
Zhao Mei’s eyes darted before she turned to Wang Cuihua.
“See that? My daughter was just inside resting after waking up. You really know how to slander people.
Even though Yunxi isn’t my biological child, I’ve always treated her like my own precious daughter. How could I possibly be as vicious as you claim?”
Wang Cuihua couldn’t understand what was going on, but she had already made up her mind. No matter what, this engagement had to be broken off.
Yunxi happened to want the same thing. She had no intention of having anything to do with the novel’s second male lead. It was best to cut ties completely.
She looked up and saw a dark-skinned young man standing beside Wang Cuihua, appearing to be in his early twenties.
From the memories she inherited, she recognized him as the original host’s fiancé, Wang Hao. The moment she noticed the jade pendant hanging around his neck, her eyes lit up.
In the original novel, the heroine had obtained that jade pendant from the second male lead and gained a massive storage space because of it. Naturally, Yunxi couldn’t let it slip away.
The pendant had originally been the engagement token between Wang Hao and the original Yunxi. Since she had transmigrated into Little Yunxi’s body, the original owner’s belongings were now hers too.
Turning toward Zhao Mei, she asked, “Auntie Zhao, from what I’m hearing, Auntie Wang is accusing me of running away with someone else?”
Zhao Mei couldn’t help glancing at Yunxi. The girl had actually called her “mom” earlier. Usually she only called her “Auntie Zhao.”
Still, no matter what strange mood Yunxi was in, Zhao Mei immediately put on the appearance of a loving mother.
“Isn’t that right? Your Auntie Wang heard some nonsense rumors from who knows where and came here making accusations.
She even said I, as your stepmother, was so cruel I wanted to sell you off. Oh, it’s infuriating!”
Yunxi nodded heavily and looked at the neighbors gathered behind them.
“Uncles and aunties, since everyone’s here, please be witnesses for me. If Auntie Wang wants to break off the engagement, then just talk about ending it properly. How can you slander someone for no reason?
Since things have already become like this, let’s cancel the engagement. But I’m the one breaking off the engagement with the Wang family.”
The moment Wang Hao heard Yunxi agree to cancel the engagement, his grin nearly stretched to his ears.
Yunxi walked up to him and suddenly snatched the jade pendant from his neck, gripping it tightly in her hand.
Wang Hao tried to take it back, but Yunxi glared at him.
“Since your mother dragged you here to call off the engagement, you still want to keep my belongings?”
Wang Cuihua turned and glared at her son.
“I already had someone examine that thing. It’s worthless junk. If she wants it, let her have it. But return the fifty yuan our family gave you.”
The moment Zhao Mei heard “fifty yuan,” she became unwilling.
“Wang Cuihua, what nonsense are you talking about? This engagement was arranged by the older generation. How can it be canceled just because you say so?”
Zhao Mei was still thinking about the issue with the deputy factory director. If she married the brat off, she could still make a sum of money from it.
Naturally she’d be willing to pay Wang Cuihua fifty yuan if that arrangement worked out. But now that it had fallen through, there was no way she’d willingly pay up.
Yunxi couldn’t be bothered listening to them argue anymore. She had already gotten the jade pendant.
She turned toward Zhao Mei.
“Auntie Zhao, I’ll head back inside first. You can handle things out here.”
With that, she turned and walked back toward her room, leaving Zhao Mei’s face dark with anger.
That brat had directly dumped such a troublesome matter onto her—and even taken the engagement jade pendant along with her.
At that moment, Liu Jiaojiao returned carrying a basket. Seeing so many neighbors gathered at their house, she looked puzzled.
When Zhao Mei saw Liu Jiaojiao return, she waved her over.
“Liu Jiaojiao, you’re back? There’s food warming in the pot. Go eat first.”
Early that morning, Liu Jiaojiao had gone to visit a classmate. There she learned that Yunxi had secretly secured an official position at the textile factory without telling the family.
That little bitch really had absurdly good luck.
Leaning close to Zhao Mei’s ear, Liu Jiaojiao whispered,
“Mom, you have no idea. That little bitch secretly found herself a job outside. And it’s even a permanent factory position. She never told us.”
Zhao Mei narrowed her eyes upon hearing this, then looked toward Wang Cuihua and the gossiping neighbors crowding the house.
“Wang Cuihua, we’ll discuss the money later. Everyone else, disperse now.”
But Wang Cuihua refused to let it go. She stepped forward and grabbed Zhao Mei’s sleeve.
“Your daughter already got the jade pendant back. If you don’t return my fifty yuan, nobody’s having a peaceful day today.”
As Zhao Mei had her hair yanked, she slapped at Wang Cuihua’s hand.
“Fine, fine, we’ll cancel it! I’ll go get the money right now!”
Since the engagement would have to be broken off sooner or later anyway, she turned and went inside, returning with fifty yuan that she shoved into Wang Cuihua’s arms.
“Break it off then! Your dark-skinned son isn’t worthy of my Yunxi anyway. She may be thin and frail, but she’s beautiful.”
The surrounding neighbors all nodded in agreement. Zhao Mei noticed their approving looks and immediately continued,
“My Yunxi has beauty and brains. She used to study well and was obedient too. I adore her dearly.
Auntie Wang, remember this well. Since the engagement’s broken off, don’t come regretting it later.”
Wang Cuihua snorted coldly.
“Regret it? If anyone’s going to regret it, it’ll be you people.”
With that, she dragged Wang Hao away. Seeing the excitement was over, the gathered neighbors gradually dispersed as well.
After returning to her room, Yunxi quickly locked the door.
She shoved her finger into her mouth and bit down hard—but failed to break the skin and only ended up trembling from the pain.
“Damn! Novels always say to bite your finger and use blood to claim ownership. This freaking hurts!”
Unable to stop complaining, she started searching the room for a needle.
Finally, she found one in a basket on the table. She pricked her finger, letting a drop of blood fall onto the jade pendant.
The instant the blood touched it, the jade emitted a dazzling white light.
Very quickly, the glow faded—and Yunxi found herself standing inside a separate dimension.
The first thing she saw upon opening her eyes was an endless stretch of rich black soil.
A few steps ahead stood a small wooden cabin, beside which flowed a little stream. Walking over, she saw the water was crystal clear, with fish occasionally swimming freely through it.
Behind the cabin was a massive orchard filled with all kinds of fruit trees. Some she recognized, others were unfamiliar. Every branch hung heavy with ripe fruit.
Directly in front of the cabin was a spring of water.
Yunxi scratched her head in confusion. If she remembered correctly, when the heroine in the original novel obtained the space, there had only been a small patch of black soil and a shabby hut.
So why was the space she unlocked completely different?
Not only was there a wooden cabin, but also a stream and fruit trees—and the black farmland stretched farther than the eye could see.
She walked over to the spirit spring and stared at the glowing water.
This must be the spiritual spring water described in the novel.
But unlike the heroine’s version, which only produced three drops a day and had to be used sparingly, this spring seemed entirely different.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Zhao Mei’s voice suddenly rang out from outside the door.
“Yunxi! Get out here!
Yunxi, did you hear me? Don’t think hiding in there will solve anything!”
Still inside the space, Yunxi used a thought to leave it.
Outside, Liu Wei’s voice sounded as well.
“Zhao Mei, what are you yelling for? Is everything outside settled?”
Zhao Mei turned and saw Liu Wei emerge, snorting coldly.
“Your daughter is exactly like you. Whenever something happens, all she knows how to do is hide and leave me to handle everything alone!”
