Liang’s mother’s reaction confirmed Jiang Yichu’s suspicions.
She had thought so—such a rare surname, and both of them being soldiers, it was highly unlikely they would just randomly run into each other.
Liang’s mother, concerned about Jiang Yichu, asked, “Your mother and sister don’t know about you and Ying Zheng yet, right?”
If they found out, this engagement could never be undone.
Jiang Yichu nodded. “To be honest, I only just figured it out myself.”
Liang’s mother sighed, feeling a bit anxious for Jiang Yichu.
Given how biased the Jiang family seemed this morning, if this news broke, the poor girl would likely face a lot of difficulties.
“However, Auntie has a solution.”
Liang’s mother pulled her down to sit, speaking in a tone that sounded like she was making a suggestion. “If I can’t make you my daughter-in-law, how about you become my daughter instead?”
Such a beautiful girl—if the Jiang family didn’t appreciate her, she certainly would.
Liang’s mother continued, “If you agree, once your Uncle Liang gets off work, we’ll go ahead and finalize the formalities.”
…Is it going to be that fast?
Jiang Yichu blinked in surprise.
Liang’s mother didn’t rush her, “You can take your time to think about it if you want.”
“No need!”
Jiang Yichu was straightforward.
In her previous life, she had little familial connection, and in this life, she was stuck with a capricious mother. Having someone genuinely care about her made her happy, so the more affection, the better.
She immediately corrected herself, “Godmother.”
“Eh!”
Liang’s mother responded with delight, her heart swelling with happiness.
“Is Heng still in his room, unable to get out of bed? Let’s not worry about him for now.”
“How old are you, Chuchu?”
“21.”
“When’s your birthday?”
“Early August.”
“Ah, you’re younger than Aying. Aying is from Xiyue. She’s out on a field training exercise with the military, but when she returns, I’ll have her meet her little sister.”
Jiang’s mother had mentioned that the Liang family had one son and one daughter.
The girl’s name was Liang Ying? Such a lovely name.
“Alright,” Jiang Yichu nodded.
It was so nice to suddenly have an older sister. She was happy about it.
“Well, after dinner today, we’ll head back,” Liang’s mother said.
“Formally recognizing you as my daughter is a big deal, but today’s too rushed to prepare a proper ceremony. Let’s just have dinner at home and celebrate for now.”
“Sounds good.” Jiang Yichu nodded.
She preferred being with Liang’s mother than dealing with the Jiang family’s mother and daughter.
Auntie was making dinner.
Since there was a joyous occasion, she specially made some Western-style meatballs.
Liang’s mother called Liang’s father, and just as he was about to finish work, she had him come home immediately.
Liang Heng’s troublemaking had put his father on edge. When he received the call, his heart skipped a beat.
He rushed home, thinking something major had happened.
Liang’s mother smiled and nodded. “It’s a big deal.”
“A happy one though.”
She pulled Jiang Yichu over to introduce her to her husband. “Chuchu, the one who saved your son yesterday, I’m going to make her my goddaughter!”
Liang’s father, in his late forties with a square face, looked very much like a strong man.
Upon hearing that she was going to be made a goddaughter, he breathed a sigh of relief.
He looked at his wife with a tender, loving gaze. “You handle the family matters.”
Liang’s father patted his pocket, “Came back in a rush, didn’t bring anything.”
“No rush for gifts.”
Liang’s mother smiled. “Anyway, the Jiang family still has to formally eat with us to cancel the engagement with Jiang Sirou and recognize Chuchu as our goddaughter.”
The contrast between this and the Jiang family’s previous attitude was quite satisfying for Jiang Yichu.
It was hard to imagine how furious Jiang’s mother would look when she found out.
Liang’s father realized the potential problem and quietly spoke to his wife, “This is foolish.”
“You’re slapping Jiang Zhiyuan in the face like this. How is Chuchu going to live in their house after this?”
“And Jiang’s family might not even accept her as our goddaughter in the future.”
There was no need to act in the heat of the moment.
Liang’s mother thought for a moment and agreed with him.
But with such a warm family atmosphere, Jiang Yichu felt a deep sense of comfort.
She spoke more freely now, “It’s fine. If they disagree, we can just do it quietly.”
After all, Jiang Zhiyuan hadn’t really fulfilled his duties as a father, so no one would bat an eye if she said she was raised by someone else.
Liang’s mother laughed at her response.
Dinner was harmonious between the three of them.
It was getting late, and it wouldn’t be appropriate for Jiang Yichu to stay too long.
Before sending her home, Liang’s mother asked Liang’s father, “Are you free tomorrow evening? It’s best to formalize the recognition as soon as possible.”
“What’s more important than a daughter-in-law?” Liang’s father grabbed his wife’s hand affectionately. “Let’s set it for tomorrow.”
Before leaving, they also fed her a mouthful of dog food.
Liang’s father’s driver personally took Jiang Yichu back home.
The lights in the living room were off.
The first floor was completely dark.
When they heard the door open, the aunt came out from her room. Seeing Jiang Yichu, she half-heartedly greeted her and turned to leave.
“They’re not home?”
The maid replied, “They went to eat with the Ying family.”
That made things interesting.
Jiang Yichu placed the things Liang’s mother had given her back in her room and then went straight into the space.
The seeds she had bought from the black market had sprouted already, just one night after being planted.
The magical effect of the spiritual spring fruit was indeed extraordinary.
She dunked her face into the spiritual spring, thinking to herself that at this rate, in a week’s time, her complexion would probably improve.
She soaked for half an hour.
Hearing the sound of the family coming back downstairs, Jiang Yichu emerged from the space.
“They’re back?” Jiang Sirou handed a gift box to the maid, then glanced upstairs.
The maid nodded. “They’re back.”
“They were carrying a lot of things. It must be from Mrs. Liang.”
Heh. It was clear that if she wasn’t valued, anyone could speak badly of her behind her back.
After wiping her face dry, Jiang Yichu opened the skincare products Mrs. Liang had sent her today, sitting at her vanity as she patted the cream on her face.
There was a knock on the door.
Jiang Sirou pushed the door open as usual.
Seeing the gift box on the vanity, she wrinkled her nose in disgust.
“Jiang Yichu, can’t you stop accepting things from everyone? You’re so petty! You’re embarrassing our family!”
“If it’s embarrassing to you, you can go back to the countryside. No one will care there.”
As she spoke, Jiang Yichu didn’t even spare Jiang Sirou a glance.
Jiang Sirou’s face turned pale from the rebuke.
Just then, footsteps sounded behind her. Jiang’s mother came down the stairs.
Jiang Sirou’s eyes instantly filled with tears. “Sis, if you don’t want to see me, I’ll go back to the countryside tomorrow. I’m sorry!”
“Why are you crying, Rou Rou?”
She had been so cheerful when she first came in, and now she was suddenly crying.
Without saying another word, Jiang’s mother rushed over to Jiang Yichu. “Jiang Yichu, what are you trying to do!”
“Mom.”
Jiang Sirou pulled on her mother’s sleeve, pouting. “Sis didn’t mean it.”
“She’s right, I’m not your biological child, I don’t have a place to interfere in her matters.”
“Whether Mrs. Liang gives her a gift or not is up to her.”
In just a few words, Jiang’s mother understood the situation.
“Jiang Yichu!”
She looked at the skincare set on the table, her face changing color. “Who told you to accept these things? Are you begging?!”
