Chapter 11: Going to Snatch Someone from Some Family? Shangping Village…
Shangping Village
9:00 AM
A group of children were waving brooms in the falling snow, and the villagers had all come out to watch.
That’s how things were in the village unless a car was coming back from the city, no one usually bothered to clear the snow.
A few boisterous adult farmers stood by the roadside, smiling and teasing the leader, Luo Shisi:
“Hey, why’s Luo Family’s Fourteen suddenly decided to shovel snow? This isn’t even the direction cars come from, is it?”
“I reckon it’s not that her family’s expecting anyone…”
“Oh ho, do you know something we don’t?”
A newly married Female Alpha pretended to whisper to her friend: “Look at her posture isn’t she… going to snatch someone from some family!?”
Especially that last remark, the tone practically soaring sky-high, as if afraid no one would hear it.
The nearby adults burst into laughter.
Standing a bit far away, Lin Chao couldn’t hear them, only seeing the people across the way laughing cheerfully, which left him somewhat puzzled.
Hearing this, Luo Shisi raised an eyebrow and broke into a smile. She lifted her shovel, sending a heap of snow flying their way: “Shoo, shoo! Spreading rumors is as easy as opening your mouth but refuting them will wear your legs out!”
“If I went for a run in the morning, you’d probably say I’d just crawled out of someone’s bed…”
“Have a little mercy I’m still a child, you know~”
The young Female Alphas paid no mind. In the village, people marry early; some Alphas might wed as young as thirteen or fourteen.
Besides, they were only a few years older than her, and Luo Shisi was precocious, so there was no communication gap between them.
Hearing her words, they pointed at her and laughed: “What kind of child goes around constantly reminding everyone they’re a child?”
Luo Shisi curled her lips, her expression brimming with the carefree boldness unique to a young girl, her hands never stopping: “Me, that’s who.”
Her slender fingers gripped the iron shovel, the backs of her hands red from the cold, yet Luo Shisi felt her palms were almost sweating.
Even with her thick skin, their teasing was a bit hard to take.
Shangping Village had a custom: if it snowed on the day of a wedding, the Husband’s primary partner had to personally clear the snow and lay a red carpet on the road to bring the Concubine home.
Otherwise, there’d be no hope of carrying the groom back.
Luo Shisi’s gaze swept toward the silly rabbit’s house across the way, and, to her surprise, she found Lin Chao standing quietly there, bundled in a heavy cotton coat, staring fixedly in her direction.
He looked impossibly well-behaved.
He really did seem like a Concubine waiting for his Husband’s primary partner to arrive.
Luo Shisi lowered her eyes and sighed.
The Lin family’s attitude that day had clearly indicated no such intention.
Watching too much TV has had its effects, after all how often did someone repay a life debt by offering themselves?
In that case, she’d just treat him like a younger brother.
Someone this well-behaved shouldn’t be bullied by anyone…
Luo Shisi pressed her lips together, unsure why, but she felt as if a hole had been torn open in her heart, letting the wind rush in.
Alphas had excellent stamina, so she quickly cleared the path over to him.
Luo Shisi leaned on her shovel, standing opposite him, and laughed at the sight of Lin Chao.
“Not even wearing a hat”
The boy’s hair and eyelashes were dusted with snow, some of the flakes on his lashes having melted into droplets that trembled with each blink.
Though it looked quite lovely, Luo Shisi still pulled out a tissue and reached over quite naturally to wipe them away.
As an older sister, it was only right to dote on a younger brother just wiping his eyes, Luo Shisi told herself.
“Come on, let’s go have fun…” Luo Shisi said, suddenly lowering her voice as she leaned closer to him cheerfully. “There’s a natural ski slope further down to the west. I’ll take you there.”
Lin Chao froze for a moment, then nodded gently.
Watching her turn away, he pressed a hand over his heart, feeling his heartbeat suddenly accelerate, his breathing growing rapid along with it.
Luo Shisi was truly much taller than him.
When she leaned in, a faint, almost imperceptible fragrance mixed with the icy wind and snow rushed into his nostrils.
The wind blowing against his face scattered his hair and blurred his vision. Lin Chao couldn’t help but take a small step back.
Yet the rhythm of his heartbeat had already been thrown into disarray.
