Chapter 14: Second Aunt’s Husband Is Tired
On the way back, Luo Shisi held the crystal ball box the entire time.
The shop owner said the glue would take a while to fully set, and during this period, the box shouldn’t be shaken.
The mountain road was rugged, with occasional potholes. Luo Shisi carefully cradled it in her arms, checking every two minutes to make sure the head and base hadn’t separated.
He Qing occasionally glanced in the rearview mirror it was the first time he’d seen her treasure something so much.
“Who are you giving this to?”
Luo Shisi glanced at him. For some reason, what should have been a normal question suddenly felt too embarrassing to answer.
It was as if this were a secret between her and the silly rabbit.
With a solemn expression, she adopted the air of a transcendent sage and said, “I cannot say.”
He Qing shot her a sidelong glance but didn’t press further.
When they arrived home, He Shiqing happened to be sitting at the stone table north of the landscape lake, facing the gate, so she had a clear view of the car pulling up.
She maintained her aristocratic demeanor, dressed exquisitely as always, though she had switched to a pair of pure khaki overalls. Holding a cup of coffee, she looked utterly relaxed.
The distance was too great for her to see who was in the car.
So, when she saw Luo Shisi step out of the vehicle, clutching an ugly box in her arms, she nearly spat out her coffee.
Luo Shisi usually woke up late and had severe morning irritability.
Once, when He Shiqing tried to wake her early for some fresh air, she was nearly overwhelmed by Luo Shisi’s riotous pheromones and almost turned into an idiot.
Since then, she had rarely bothered to urge self-improvement.
Her Shiqing raised her wrist to check her mechanical watch, confirming it was 8:30, not 10:30.
Strange.
Then, she watched as Luo Shisi went to the sunroom, gently placed the box beside her, took out a letter paper, and began writing something.
Very strange.
Could it be that the box contained an exam deity figurine? Had Luo Shisi suddenly decided to strive hard, study in secret, and then amaze everyone?
Devious! Superstitious!
He Shiqing immediately set down her cup, the base clinking sharply against the saucer.
She stood up at once, adjusted the straps of her overalls, and turned to enter the villa.
Fine, let’s compete! Let’s see who can outwork whom! She’ll wake up at 4 a.m. tomorrow!
As soon as Luo Shisi returned, she opened the letter paper and quickly wrote three words Apology Letter.
Then… she got stuck.
She quietly picked up her phone.
But if the letter of apology wasn’t written by herself, would it still be sincere?
Luo Shisi put her phone down again.
She remained stuck for half an hour.
After writing “I’m sorry” five times in a row on the paper, Luo Shisi finally acknowledged her limitations in language skills and surrendered to the browser.
By the time she finished, an hour had passed.
Luo Shisi held up the letter, leaned back in her chair, and admired her masterpiece. She thought it was a genius work flawless and without any loopholes.
First, admit the mistake; then, explain the reasons; finally, attach a promise. The logical chain was perfect, with no visible flaws.
Now, for the envelope. She searched for an envelope folding tutorial video.
After ruining three sheets of paper, she finally folded an envelope she was satisfied with.
How do you add fragrance?
Luo Shisi looked around and decided to sneak into He Qing’s dressing room to hunt for treasures.
Why sneak?
Because when she was little and mischievous, she had ruined three of The Qing’s lipsticks.
Ever since then, a note has been posted on He Qing’s dressing room door
“Luo Shisi and dogs, no entry!”
The “no entry” was even highlighted in bold red.
Luo Shisi stepped out of the sunroom and immediately headed to The Qing’s dressing room, pushing the door open with one hand, her expression unapologetic.
What did Luo Shisi and dogs have to do with her? She was Fourteen!
He Qing had a lot of cosmetics, he was a hoarder, with multiple bottles of the same products lined up on his table.
Luo Shisi didn’t understand any of it; she was just there to steal some perfume.
Soon, she found a spray on the table that carried a faint, pleasant scent.
This must be it it smelled quite similar to The Qing’s usual fragrance.
But Luo Shisi felt… it wasn’t fragrant enough.
After rummaging through He Qing’s dressing table again, she found a plain white bottle that stood out oddly among the array of luxury brands yet looked like it was used the most.
Luo Shisi opened the cap and took a whiff.
Mmm! Fragrant! This was the one!
Dabao! The eternal champion!
She stuffed the Dabao into her pants pocket and tried to slip out, but as soon as she opened the door, she ran into He Qing, who was standing there with a dark expression.
He stood with his arms crossed, clearly having been there for a while.
“What are you up to?” He Qing suddenly smiled.
The smile sent a chill down Luo Shisi’s spine, and she quickly tried to slip past him, but He Qing grabbed her by the ear and pulled her back, his voice icy. “Put everything back in order!”
Once everything was settled, Luo Shisi took the envelope and the Crystal Ball to find Lin Chao.
Along the way, she repeatedly practiced what she would say when she saw him.
But as soon as she reached his doorstep, she saw Chai Xiaoqing arm in arm with a middle-aged man, chatting by the gate.
“He’s so delicate, isn’t he? Just a spider falling on him, and he gets scared sick. Hmph, my Jian’er isn’t afraid to catch them with his bare hands…”
“Ah, Old Third’s family has raised a living treasure! I’m not one to gossip, but kids these days are so fragile!”
The middle-aged man chuckled dismissively. “Yeah, spiders every earthen kiln has them. They even eat bugs, they’re good to have around.”
Hearing this, Luo Shisi frowned directly.
She approached the two and scanned the surroundings.
That day, when she fell while chasing the pig, she had glanced up and accidentally spotted a gray striped spider leg quite thick, too.
She wondered if it was the same one.
Luo Shisi soon spotted the familiar spider leg. She was exceptionally tall for her age, taller than Chai Xiaoqing.
With her height advantage, she could see things others couldn’t.
Before Chai Xiaoqing could even greet her, she noticed Luo Shisi searching for something.
The middle-aged man, wearing a headscarf, watched curiously with his hands behind his back, wondering what she was up to.
Perhaps because the hole wasn’t deep enough, the spider was staying close to the surface. Luo Shisi tucked the letter into her pocket, set her things aside, and picked up a dry branch from nearby to poke at it.
Startled, the spider darted out and scurried onto its web.
Chai Xiaoqing and the middle-aged man were instantly shocked.
Luo Shisi looked at them and smiled. “Is this the ‘little spider’ you were talking about?”
The middle-aged man looked up at the spider, which was nearly half the size of an adult’s fist, and slapped his thigh. “Good heavens! This is an outrage! Your family’s spider is practically a demon!”
Chai Xiaoqing was also terrified, her face turning pale as she covered her mouth, speechless, her eyes nearly popping out of their sockets.
The spider was closest to him, right above his head. When he looked up, he could even see the dense fine hair on its legs, its four black bean-like eyes, and its abdomen pulsating rhythmically.
The Lin family’s gate was built from packed yellow earth, with a simple doorway carved into the middle of the earthen wall.
In her panic, Chai Xiaoqing screamed and grabbed a clump of dirt from the wall to throw at it.
This only made things worse. If she hadn’t thrown it, she wouldn’t have suffered the subsequent fright.
The large spider’s web was broken by the dirt cloud, causing the spider to swing back and forth on a single silk thread before finally landing on Chai Xiaoqing’s head.
The middle-aged man pointed frantically at Chai Xiaoqing’s head and shouted: “Head! Head! It’s crawling on your head!”
As Chai Xiaoqing’s gaze shifted upward and she saw a spider leg descending from her head, she let out a strangled cry like a duck being choked, rolled her eyes back, and fainted on the spot.
The middle-aged man was so terrified that tears streamed down his face.
The women inside heard the screams and came running out, just in time to see the spider crawling down from Chai Xiaoqing’s head and rapidly scaling the wall.
Luo Shisi moved swiftly, using a branch to knock it to the ground, then immediately picked up a stone and smashed it down hard.
The large spider was pierced by the stone, its six legs twitching several times before greenish blood began spreading around the stone, forming a large pool.
Lin Chao, already weakened from hypothermia, developed a fever after the shock that didn’t break until 3 a.m.
When he first woke up, still somewhat disoriented, he heard Second Aunt’s Husband shouting.
His father, seeing him awake, lovingly handed him a bowl of water: “Drink some, don’t get dehydrated.”
Lin Chao sat up holding his head, his lips pale as he drank.
“Son, keep drinking. I’ll go see what’s happening outside?”
The screaming sounded quite intense.
Cen Afeng felt his forehead, confirming the fever had broken before standing up.
Just outside, he found Chai Xiaoqing lying on the ground while her friend stood nearby looking at a weak knight.
Lin Guilan, who had just been lectured by Lin Guifang and was in a bad mood, came out to see Chai Xiaoqing lying on the ground. She immediately stepped forward to help her up, questioning the middle-aged man beside them.
The man’s lips trembled as he pointed at the spider crushed by the stone: “Sp sp spider.”
Then he pointed at Chai Xiaoqing: “Fainted.”
Lin Guilan was utterly annoyed. Seeing the spider, she snapped: “It’s just a spider! Haven’t you seen one before? How could this scare you? Always causing trouble!”
Seeing his incoherent explanation, Luo Shisi bent down to pick up the shovel leaning in the corner. After placing some soil on the shovel blade, she scooped up the spider along with the stone and presented it to Lin Guilan.
Caught off guard, Lin Guilan jumped back in fright, exclaiming: “Oh my~y~y~y!”
“What are you doing?” she demanded angrily, feeling embarrassed as she glared at Luo Shisi.
Luo Shisi tilted her head, furrowing her brow in confusion:
“I’m not doing anything. Elder Sister, this thing just fell on your Concubine’s head. I was the one who killed it. Why are you angry?”
Lin Guilan looked at the middle-aged man, who immediately nodded: “Yes! Yes!”
Lin Guilan instantly fell silent but felt too humiliated to look at her.
With a swing of her shovel, Luo Shisi sent the spider flying far away, the yellow earth dust rising in the air and making several people cough.
She glanced at their expressions and feigned concern, “Oh dear, I might have started off a bit too strong. My apologies, surely a Master wouldn’t hold a grudge against a child, right?”
Lin Guilan shot her another glare before carrying Chai Xiaoqing away.
The middle-aged man, seeing the matter resolved, slunk off in disgrace.
Luo Shisi dusted off her hands and noticed Chai Xiaoqing cracking one eye open. Deliberately raising her voice, she remarked, “Ah, these adults nowadays are as fragile as paper! Even scared of a tiny little spider. This one’s certainly delicate, isn’t it~”
Though she occasionally used local dialect, she normally avoided it, finding her hometown speech somewhat sarcastic sounding.
Today, however, she’d indulged in it freely.
Her sarcasm could be detected from ten miles away.
Cen Afeng had just stepped out when he saw Second Aunt Carrying Chai Xiaoqing back, with Luo Shisi making such comments behind them. He immediately understood what had transpired.
An irrepressible smile surfaced on his face, which he quickly suppressed when Lin Guilan looked his way, lowering his head to rub his nose.
Lin Chao also heard Luo Shisi’s words. In his daze, he watched as Second Aunt’s Husband was carried into the room and placed beside him, a pillow tucked under his head.
Holding his bowl, his long eyelashes fluttering in confusion, he hoarsely asked, “Second Aunt… what happened to Second Aunt’s Husband?”
Author’s Note:
Second Aunt: He’s just tired and couldn’t find a bed.
Second Aunt’s Husband is fine; he just wanted to shed some little pearls…
Promoting my upcoming work, I really love this story:
“Childhood Sweethearts (GB)”
Female Alpha Male Omega, mutual pampering, double c.
After Xu He was presented as an Omega at age ten, his parents decided with their neighbors to betroth him to Song Zhimu as childhood sweethearts.
Out of curiosity, he went to see her.
Song Zhimu had always been quiet since childhood. Even when he spoke to her, she wouldn’t respond, just watched him.
Xu, He found her too dull and never went to play with her again.
Childhood betrothals were mere playful words anyway. Soon after, his family moved away from Rucheng, and the matter was forgotten.
Seventeen years later, Xu He was 27. Having worked several consecutive overtime shifts, he developed inflammation a swollen gum that forced him to see a doctor.
After registering and hearing his number called, he entered the dental clinic.
The doctor was a Female Alpha, young and handsome, belonging to the cool, aloof type. From the moment he entered, she hadn’t glanced at him.
Only when he sat down did he hear her voice: “Patient’s name?”
Xu He looked at the name on the doctor’s badge and replied: “Xu He.”
Song Zhimu? Why does that name sound so familiar? Must be his imagination?
Upon hearing his name, the pen in the doctor’s hand fell to the ground, creating a clatter of noise.
Ever since Song Zhimu first met Xu He as a child, she found him special.
Especially noisy, especially good looking.
Unlike her quiet self, he was terrifyingly active, like a ball of fire.
She would occasionally hear stories about him… like how he was often late… or how he beat up the school bully until he cried…
It wasn’t until he graduated university that Song Zhimu’s world finally quieted down.
She always thought they would never cross paths again, but the moment she saw him in the examination room, she felt… their childhood betrothal should be put on the agenda.
