Is Ling Wangjin scary?
Yu Ning had found herself pondering this question recently.
Not scary, not even a little bit.
The softly whispered instructions, the gentle and warm embraces, the food that hit the spot, and even that beautiful, heart-stopping face.
Perhaps that was why, in both lifetimes, Yu Ning had been unwilling to leave Ling Wangjin.
But it would be unrealistic for a partner to be perfectly sincere and accommodating in every single way, wouldn’t it?
As expected… Before, she had played dumb, thinking that perhaps she was just lucky enough to have stumbled upon a good partner. Now that she had uncovered the truth, half of the weight on Yu Ning’s heart had lifted, but her troubles had only multiplied.
She had originally been considering how to deal with Ling Wangjin.
Now, however, her conversation with Jin Miao had gradually helped Yu Ning make up her mind.
Should I try to save him first? she thought to herself.
Yu Ning had read quite a few redemption-themed novels, and she rather liked those types of unhinged, abnormal characters.
In novels of this genre, the author would often detail the past experiences of the unhinged character, and in the end, they would prescribe the right medicine for the illness, using love to save them.
But that brought up a problem.
Yu Ning realized that she didn’t seem to know much about Ling Wangjin’s past.
Because when she had once hinted at wanting to meet his parents, Ling Wangjin had told her, “My mother passed away, and my father went missing.”
This background sounded quite tragic, and Yu Ning hadn’t had the heart to ask for details when she heard it. Consequently, she had no idea what had happened in Ling Wangjin’s past to make him the way he was today.
Yu Ning couldn’t help but suspect: was he doing that on purpose?
After all, whenever he mentioned his parents, his expression was calm and gentle, his tone light and airy, as if he were speaking of something entirely trivial.
Given the current situation, even if she asked him, he would likely just brush it off.
Yu Ning decided she would investigate it herself first.
But to investigate, she needed a clear direction. Yu Ning recalled her chat with Jin Miao and realized that while they had talked a lot, they hadn’t mentioned much about Ling Wangjin’s past.
It seemed she would have to chat with her again after she finished her doctor’s appointment. At the thought of this, Jin Miao’s pale, haggard face suddenly flashed through Yu Ning’s mind.
Forget it, Yu Ning thought.
How was she supposed to investigate? Yu Ning typed Ling Wangjin’s name into Baidu to search for him. It brought up a link to his hospital, but that wasn’t helpful.
Hire someone to investigate? She searched for private investigators. Such companies existed, but she didn’t know if they were reliable.
There were some things you didn’t realize were difficult until you actually tried to do them.
She also had no idea what methods Ling Wangjin had used to track her.
Just as she was thinking about this, that very person sent her a WeChat message.
Little Darling: [Image]
Little Darling: Want to go?
Yu Ning didn’t really want to respond to him. Even though Ling Wangjin usually looked incredibly submissive, she always had the lingering feeling that she was being manipulated by him.
She glanced roughly at the picture and realized it was the burger joint she had been craving.
Hand-Cut Lemon: It’s open?
Little Darling: Do you want to come over and eat?
Hand-Cut Lemon: Alright, wait for me. I’m taking a taxi over!
Little Darling: I’ll pick you up.
Although Yu Ning was focused on the burgers, she remembered to slightly cover her tracks so that he wouldn’t be able to deduce the existence of Jin Miao.
Hand-Cut Lemon: No need, running back and forth is a hassle. I can get there faster by taxi.
Little Darling: Alright, how long until you arrive? I’ll go line up first.
Yu Ning calculated the time and sent it over.
After sending the WeChat, Yu Ning hailed a taxi. The trip was smooth and unobstructed, and she arrived even earlier than the time she had estimated.
Ling Wangjin was already waiting on the side of the road. He stepped forward to open the car door for her.
Yu Ning: “Weren’t you lining up?”
She handed him the taxi receipt she had torn off.
“I’m in the process of it. There are no seats inside.” He raised his hand, shaking the number tag, and took the receipt.
Yu Ning: “You knew what I wanted to eat?”
“There aren’t many items.” Ling Wangjin smiled. “I ordered one of everything so you can try a bit of each.”
“What a waste.” Yu Ning found a point to complain about.
Ling Wangjin: “If you can’t finish it, I’ll eat it. It won’t be wasted.”
For some reason, Yu Ning remembered the dream where, after he ate fried food, he would secretly get up in the middle of the night for several days in a row to lift weights.
She couldn’t help it; she laughed.
“Then you should eat more.”
It was just as he said; the burger joint didn’t have many varieties. He had ordered all four types of burgers, a large box of fried chicken, and the limited-edition milkshake.
Since there were no seats at the burger joint, he had asked the staff to pack everything into a thermal container he had brought along. He then took her to a nearby, newly opened psychological counseling hospital.
Yu Ning scanned the lobby of the clinic. The doctors and nurses inside greeted Ling Wangjin with smiles.
She followed him all the way to the second floor, where there was a small office.
The sofa in the office was also shaped like Pikachu.
Yu Ning: “Opened another branch?”
Ling Wangjin washed his hands, put on disposable gloves, and peeled open the burger packaging. He used a wooden knife to slice the burger.
“It’s not exactly newly opened; it’s been here for a while. It’s quiet here, and it’s not far from the burger joint. Is it okay if I cut it in half?”
He certainly has a lot of assets.
Yu Ning: “Half is too much. I want to taste everything. Quarter it.”
Yu Ning knew he was quite wealthy, but she hadn’t thought too much about it before.
However, now that he was not only completely submissive but also rich—some novels wouldn’t even dare write it like this—Yu Ning felt a sense of doubt again.
Why did he like her?
Yu Ning took the sliced burger. The bun was yellow; she hadn’t seen one like this before, so she pinched it quietly.
Ling Wangjin: “The bread is supposedly made with potatoes.”
He could even accurately capture her thoughts. Yu Ning took a bite of the burger.
“The texture is indeed a bit different, but the patty is too dry. Still, it’s much better than other burger joints.”
Ling Wangjin’s wooden knife sliced through the burger patty a few times.
“It was over-fried. I’ll try making some this weekend.”
Yu Ning: “No need, that’s not what I meant.”
“I know.” He placed the newly cut burger into a paper box. “I’m off on the weekend anyway. Making some good food sounds nice.”
The freshly cut burger was steaming hot, and clear juices flowed from the cut surface, mixed with the alluring aroma of the fried chicken.
Yu Ning gazed at his profile.
Whether it was the atmosphere or the gentle tone of the man cutting the burger, she couldn’t say.
She couldn’t help but ask the question in her heart.
“Why do you like me?”
His cutting motion stalled for a few seconds.
“Does liking someone need a reason?”
When Ling Wangjin spoke, his gaze turned toward her, meeting her eyes squarely.
“If I really had to say, it was love at first sight.”
His expression was quite serious, and his eyes didn’t blink, which actually made Yu Ning feel a bit shy.
“The first time we met? Was it that time I got into a fight with someone?”
“Right.” He smiled and blinked. “You even cracked someone’s head open.”
Yu Ning: ”…”
Thinking of that incident, Yu Ning felt a bit of regret.
“Don’t mention it. I feel like I have no class at all, getting into a fight with someone!”
“You didn’t do anything wrong, at most you were just a little excessive.” Ling Wangjin inserted a straw into the milkshake.
Hearing him say that, Yu Ning nodded.
“That’s true. It was them who hit someone with their motorcycle and didn’t apologize in the first place.”
“That’s why it was love at first sight for me.” He held the milkshake, turned the straw half a circle, and brought it to Yu Ning’s lips. “You suddenly asked me this question.”
Ling Wangjin: “Did someone say something to you?”
