Because of Fan Ningyue’s physical constitution, her injuries healed quickly.
An Muning woke up after hearing some movement. When he walked out, the woman outside was already starting to tear off the bandages on her body.
Hearing the sound, Fan Ningyue turned her head.
Bare shoulders… well, not exactly “bare shoulders.”
Her fair skin was crisscrossed with intersecting wounds that had yet to fully heal.
An Muning stared at the scars on her shoulders, his expression unreadable.
“Um…” Fan Ningyue awkwardly spoke up, breaking his gaze. “My clothes…”
“Your clothes are ruined,” An Muning said, yawning. “When I treated your wounds, I already saw everything. Just wear mine for now. I’ll take you to a nearby shopping mall later to pick something out.”
Fan Ningyue’s face flushed slightly. “Saw everything…”
“You were about to die—why do you still care about that?” An Muning raised an eyebrow.
“When I’m about to die, I don’t care,” Fan Ningyue muttered, rubbing her face. “Now that I’m not dead, of course I care…”
“Your mood shifts really fast,” An Muning muttered.
Yesterday she still looked like she had given up on life, and today she was already embarrassed.
“Anyway, thank you,” Fan Ningyue said, wrapping the blanket around herself. After confirming she wouldn’t be exposed, she carefully stood up. “And… this blanket too.”
“Don’t mention it,” An Muning waved his hand. “It’s not like we ever reached the point of being mortal enemies. What was that saying again? Saving a life is better than building a seven-story pagoda… tofu?”
“It’s ‘Saving a life is better than building a seven-level pagoda…’”
“Oh right, pagoda,” An Muning nodded. “Let’s go. I’ll take you to pick out some clothes.”
He casually tossed her a large windbreaker, which landed over Fan Ningyue’s head.
“Can I take a shower first…?” she asked quietly, sniffing the faint smell of blood on herself, a little embarrassed.
An Muning made a “go ahead” gesture.
Fan Ningyue had a water-type ability, so she didn’t need to worry about water supply.
“I also need to borrow a couple of your clothes…” her voice was barely louder than a mosquito. “I don’t have pants or underwear.”
“They’re inside. Take whatever you need,” An Muning waved his hand. “Towels and everything are there, but no women’s underwear.”
After repeatedly thanking him and asking for permission several times, Fan Ningyue finally went into his room.
An Muning’s place had everything. There were no other living people here anymore—the entire city’s resources were basically his.
Fan Ningyue picked out a loose T-shirt and a pair of oversized shorts.
There was no choice. An Muning didn’t have women’s underwear, and her own pants were already beyond repair, so she could only wear loose clothing.
Steam gradually rose in the bathroom, forming a thin mist on the mirror.
Water flowed down her fair skin, gathering into streams as dried blood dissolved and mixed into the flow.
The reddish water swirled down into the drain.
Fan Ningyue lowered her head.
To be honest, until she saw the news from the Survivor Alliance, she still couldn’t understand why she had been hunted.
She never imagined that those people she had once treated sincerely…
“Haa…” she exhaled deeply.
…
The sound of running water filled the air. An Muning took a deep breath and pinched the bridge of his nose.
In the blink of an eye, he had already been in isolation here for three years. Surrounded by zombies every day, he had no outlet at all.
Not just these three years—even during the eight years of the apocalypse, he had never had any “release”—because there simply hadn’t been time.
Later, during these three years of isolation… there wasn’t even internet here. Even turning on the television was already troublesome enough.
And obviously, doing anything with zombies wasn’t an option. The main reason was that he truly hadn’t had that kind of mindset back then.
An Muning rubbed his face.
And now, there was a beautiful woman taking a shower in the bathroom behind him.
This really was a test of self-control.
Why wasn’t there such a thing as a “beautiful female zombie” in this world?
“If there really were a beautiful female zombie, I wouldn’t even mind being eaten…” he muttered to himself, leaning his head back against the sofa.
“What did you say about being eaten?”
The bathroom door opened, and Fan Ningyue walked out wiping her hair, still wearing An Muning’s clothes.
She seemed a bit uncomfortable, tugging at the collar and the hem of the shorts.
A grown woman wearing a man’s clothes—even if they were loose—would still feel awkward. It was just a physiological difference, unavoidable.
“Nothing. Finished changing?” An Muning looked over.
A towel was draped over her head. Her damp black hair fell like silk down to her waist. She wore his oversized shirt, the hem covering most of her thighs, while the shorts still left her pale calves exposed.
Noticing his gaze, her hidden bare feet in the slippers shifted slightly, clearly a little uneasy.
Fan Ningyue coughed twice. “What are you looking at…”
“Nothing,” An Muning said, taking another deep breath. “Let’s go pick clothes.”
She couldn’t keep wearing his clothes forever.
“I still need another pair of socks…”
“No need. Slippers are fine,” An Muning stood up.
A gentle breeze passed under a warm sun—a rare, peaceful scene.
Since Fan Ningyue had arrived, it hadn’t rained here again. The ground was already dry as she followed An Muning downstairs and stepped onto solid earth.
The wind blew in with a faint scent of earth, lifting her still-damp long hair and making her feel unusually comfortable.
Fan Ningyue narrowed her eyes slightly—she hadn’t been to a place like this in a long time.
If you ignored the zombies on the side and the mottled bloodstains on the walls, it was actually a rather pleasant scene.
An Muning stood in front of her, his eyes a molten gold.
The zombies, as if guided by some kind of awareness, moved aside on both sides, clearing a path for the two of them.
At this stage, zombies—unless they engaged in cannibalism among themselves—basically had no real mobility. At most, they could crawl forward with their arms, and even then, at an extremely slow pace.
“Are there no evolved zombies here?” Fan Ningyue asked softly as she followed beside An Muning.
“There are, but not many. There aren’t even any ability users here, so most zombies don’t really have the conditions to evolve,” An Muning shook his head. “The remaining evolved ones are mostly scattered around, roaming the outskirts of the city, or simply heading toward human settlements.”
“But you can still control evolved zombies too, right?” Fan Ningyue asked.
“Of course—but only if I can find them. I don’t have any kind of psychic detection ability,” An Muning shrugged. “Let’s go check out the shopping mall.”
For Fan Ningyue, shopping malls weren’t unfamiliar—she had been to plenty in human settlements.
But this was the first time she was visiting one in a zombie-occupied zone, in the mood of actually going shopping.
The mall’s glass doors had long since shattered, leaving only the frame. An Muning pushed through the frame and walked inside.
“Careful. You’re wearing slippers—don’t step on glass,” he said.
Fan Ningyue waved her hand lightly, and a breeze rose up, sweeping the shards of glass aside.
The mall was dimly lit.
An Muning rested his hand on the escalator railing, and the escalator immediately started moving.
“Which floor are the clothing stores on…?”
“Aren’t they on every floor?”
“It’s the apocalypse. This whole mall is ours—of course we’re going to pick something good,” An Muning said, folding his arms. “Let’s find some high-end brands. Let’s go.”
