At this moment, facing Shen Yan, Jiang Ling felt a little nervous for no apparent reason.
She quietly took a deep breath. Anyway, Shen Yan couldn’t “perform” in that area, so there was nothing to be nervous about.
Shen Yan lowered his eyes, his gaze fixed on her.
His wife was bare-faced. Her features were delicate and clear, her skin fair with a faint blush, and her slightly upturned eyes were quite alluring.
It made his throat tighten unconsciously.
Jiang Ling was also secretly sizing him up. His brows were sharp, his eyes bright, and perhaps because he had been drinking, the top two buttons of his collar were undone.
A glimpse of his toned chest was visible, carrying a wild, masculine energy.
Shen Yan seemed to notice her nervousness. He stood up, walked to the cabinet, and took out a metal box, handing it to her.
“This is my savings over the years. You keep it.”
Jiang Ling opened the box and looked inside.
There was a bankbook and a stack of cash. The bank balance alone was over four thousand yuan.
Shen Yan wasn’t as poor as Jiang Yujiao had claimed in her past life.
“These are my bonuses from missions and my salary savings. Aside from the eight yuan I submit to the family each month, everything else is here,” he explained.
Jiang Ling counted the cash—there was about another hundred yuan.
Since he said he was giving her the money to manage, she would reluctantly accept it.
But after thinking for a moment, she took out thirty yuan and put it back into his hand.
“This is your pocket money. If it’s not enough, tell me.”
Shen Yan’s eyes moved slightly. “Alright.”
He put the money away in the cabinet. Seeing that the kerosene in the lamp was almost gone, he hesitated slightly and asked, “Do you want to heat some water and take a bath?”
“Yes!”
Jiang Ling had been waiting for this. She had been busy all day and just wanted a comfortable bath and then sleep.
It was already very late. The Shen family had all gone to sleep.
Shen Yan took her to the kitchen, boiled hot water, then mixed it with cold water to get the right temperature.
People usually bathed by the river, separately for men and women, to save carrying water.
But at this hour, Shen Yan couldn’t possibly let his wife go to the river.
There was no lamp in the bathroom, only moonlight filtering through the window. He worried she might be scared.
“You go in and wash. I’ll keep watch outside,” he said.
“Okay.”
Jiang Ling took her clothes and went inside. With him guarding outside, she felt at ease.
The sound of water flowed through the crack in the door—splashing softly—and mist drifted out faintly, carrying a light, sweet soap scent.
Shen Yan felt a surge of heat rising inside him as he listened.
His ears turned slightly red as he patiently waited for her.
After a while, the wooden door finally creaked open.
Seeing him standing there, Jiang Ling noticed his face looked a little red.
Without thinking much, she asked, “Do you want to wash too?”
“Mm.”
Shen Yan didn’t hesitate and went straight into the bathroom.
There was still some warm water left from her bath, which he simply used.
Jiang Ling’s face flushed slightly at the thought, but she didn’t say anything.
He really didn’t mind her bathwater.
He washed quickly. By the time Jiang Ling returned to the room and sat down to comb her hair, he had already come in, drying his damp hair.
He was only wearing a military green vest. The fabric clung tightly to his body, clearly outlining his broad shoulders and strong chest.
When he lifted his arms to dry his hair, the muscles in his arms tensed, full of strength.
Jiang Ling suddenly remembered how he had once pulled her out of the river, those strong arms firmly wrapped around her waist.
She knew his body was good—but not this good.
Even through the vest, she could faintly see his abdominal muscles. She counted them—about eight.
Shen Yan didn’t miss the flash of admiration in her eyes.
So she liked looking at his muscles.
Jiang Ling met his dark gaze and felt her face heat up. She quickly turned away and climbed into bed.
“It’s late. Let’s sleep.”
Shen Yan followed her, and in the dim light he saw her sleepwear collar accidentally loosen.
A patch of fair skin came into view, and his eyes darkened slightly.
His throat moved again as he said, “Okay.”
The kerosene lamp was extinguished, and the room fell into darkness.
Jiang Ling felt a warm body lying beside her. The familiar scent of soap filled her senses.
She had never thought Shen Yan would do anything to her—after all, she believed he couldn’t.
So she turned to face him and asked curiously, “Shen Yan, are you officially discharged now?”
“Not yet. I’m only temporarily out of duty. In two months, if my leg still hasn’t recovered, I’ll apply for discharge.”
“Don’t worry. Even if I retire, the higher-ups will arrange a job for me.”
Jiang Ling nodded.
It was fine. She had spiritual spring water in her space—it could cure almost anything. If he drank it regularly, his leg would likely recover soon and he could pass the medical exam.
Feeling sleepy, she was about to say goodnight when suddenly his rough hand wrapped around her waist.
“?”
Shen Yan’s voice was hoarse. “Since we’re married, we should fulfill our marital duties.”
He pulled her closer, pressing her against him.
Jiang Ling thought to herself that he was “incapable,” so what duties was he talking about? It would just be sleeping.
She looked at him in disbelief under the moonlight and met his burning gaze.
Shen Yan lowered his head and kissed her forehead.
“Is that okay?”
Before she could think, she blurted out, “Can you even do it?”
“Try and see…”
His voice was hoarse and dangerous as he kissed her.
What followed overwhelmed her completely, and she could no longer form coherent words.
In the end, she was so exhausted she couldn’t move a finger and fell asleep.
Shen Yan, however, still seemed unsatisfied. He gently kissed her flushed face, then got up to heat water and clean her body before returning to bed and holding her as they slept.
