The early next morning, Jiang Ling was awakened by the sharp, gossiping voices outside the door.
“The sun is already high in the sky, why is she still not up? I’ve never seen such a lazy new daughter-in-law. Why are we so unlucky to end up with a sister-in-law like this?”
“Maybe she’s not feeling well? Jiang Ling has always been known for being hardworking in the village.”
“Bah! I think she’s just slacking off. Not feeling well? I still go work in the fields even when I’m pregnant—why does she get to lie comfortably in bed?”
Jiang Ling frowned slightly and rubbed her aching waist before getting out of bed.
Her legs nearly gave out the moment she stood.
That beast Shen Yan—who said he “couldn’t perform”? Last night he turned her over and over again; he was definitely more than capable.
The voices outside belonged to Shen Yan’s eldest sister-in-law Zhao Xian and second sister-in-law Li Zhaodi.
Zhao Xian was relatively gentle and diligent, while Li Zhaodi was the type who gossiped nonstop and stirred trouble everywhere.
Just as Jiang Ling was about to go out and confront them, the door suddenly opened from the outside.
Shen Yan walked in and saw her standing by the bed, supporting her waist.
The dark red marks on her neck and slightly swollen lips made him instantly recall last night’s loss of control.
His fingers tightened slightly around the metal basin in his hand as warmth surged through his body.
He averted his gaze and placed the warm water aside.
“Are you okay?”
Thinking of how fierce he had been last night, Jiang Ling instinctively shrank back a little.
She had barely managed to stand up, needing to take a couple of steps to adjust.
Feeling slightly embarrassed, she replied, “I’m fine.”
Shen Yan handed her a towel after washing it. “We’ll go to the brigade captain later to get an introduction letter, then head to the city to register our marriage.”
“Okay.”
After washing her face, she felt much better.
When they went out, the Shen family was already eating breakfast. Everyone’s eyes turned toward them.
Old Madam Shen smiled and pulled Jiang Ling to sit down.
“Third daughter-in-law, you must be tired from last night. Eat breakfast first.”
“Thank you, Mom,” Jiang Ling replied with a smile.
Second sister-in-law Li Zhaodi said sourly, “Mother-in-law, she’s a new bride. She doesn’t cook or do chores in the morning. I say she should be taught a lesson—”
She hadn’t finished speaking when she felt a cold, sharp gaze on her.
Looking up, she met Shen Yan’s eagle-like dark eyes and immediately swallowed nervously.
Sensing his anger, Shen Er glared at his wife. “Eat your food. Why do you talk so much?”
Old Madam Shen also said sternly, “Li Zhaodi, if you don’t want to eat, go work instead. Stop talking nonsense!”
The room instantly quieted down.
After breakfast, Old Madam Shen didn’t even let Jiang Ling wash the dishes and urged them to go register their marriage.
On the way out, Shen Yan said quietly, “Don’t take what Second Sister-in-law said to heart.”
“I know,” Jiang Ling replied.
She was already someone who had died once—why would she care about such things? If anything, she would just fight back when it went too far.
They arrived at the jeep. Qian Zheng jumped out immediately.
“Shen Team!”
Then he smiled at Jiang Ling. “Sister-in-law!”
“Hello,” Jiang Ling replied.
Shen Yan asked him, “You’re heading back to the unit today, right? Can you give us a ride to town?”
“Of course!”
The jeep headed toward the county marriage registration office.
When they arrived, Jiang Ling saw Jiang Yujiao and Zhou Qianming there as well.
What bad timing.
Zhou Qianming’s gaze landed on Jiang Ling. For some reason, he felt she looked especially radiant today—soft pink cheeks and slightly curved lips, as if well taken care of.
Shen Yan immediately noticed his gaze and stepped forward, blocking Jiang Ling completely behind him—no gaps left at all.
Zhou Qianming: “……”
Jiang Yujiao greeted them with a smile. “What a coincidence.”
Shen Yan ignored her and led Jiang Ling inside to register their marriage.
Jiang Ling felt irritated. Of all days, she had to run into these two scum.
Soon, the registration was done. Jiang Ling looked at the “marriage certificate” in her hand, still feeling a little dazed.
She was married now—but this time, it was Shen Yan.
Shen Yan took the certificate from her, carefully folded it, and put it in his pocket.
“I’ll keep it,” he said.
She handed it over without hesitation. To her, it didn’t matter much anyway.
