Chapter 7: Wild Rabbit
Half an hour later
Pan Mengyan looked at Jiang Ruoxi and asked, “So, are you full?”
Jiang Ruoxi nodded, “Yes, pretty much.”
Pan Mengyan said, “Then let’s first find some handy things to use as weapons, otherwise we’ll be in trouble if we encounter any danger.”
Jiang Ruoxi thought she was right, “Mm-hmm, okay.”
So, the two began searching for items that could serve as weapons. Pan Mengyan found a wooden stick about the thickness of her forearm, while Jiang Ruoxi brought the stone knife from the cave. Once everything was ready, they left the cave together with Gouzi.
Outside the cave, Pan Mengyan took a deep breath and exclaimed, “Ah, how fresh the air is! How wonderful life is!”
Hearing this, Jiang Ruoxi couldn’t help but cover her mouth and laugh, “Even in our situation, you can still maintain such a positive attitude. That’s really rare.”
Pan Mengyan smiled and said, “Since things are already like this, why not enjoy life to the fullest?”
Jiang Ruoxi laughed at her words too, “Yes, you’re right.”
Pan Mengyan said cheerfully, “Alright, let’s go! Onward to a better life!”
With that, she and Jiang Ruoxi walked forward together, accompanied by Gouzi, and began exploring this unknown island.
After walking about sixty or seventy meters, they spotted a banana tree with a bunch of bananas hanging from it at least ten or so. Pan Mengyan said, “Looks like we can have an extra meal today. We’ll have fruit for dessert. Let’s come back later to pick them.”
Jiang Ruoxi nodded in agreement and continued walking with Pan Mengyan. The place they were in wasn’t far from the seaside, only about seventy or eighty meters away, as they could still hear the waves.
As they walked and looked around, Jiang Ruoxi suddenly whispered, “Look over there! There’s a rabbit.” Pan Mengyan followed the direction Jiang Ruoxi was pointing and indeed saw a gray, furry wild rabbit grazing. Holding her stick, Pan Mengyan slowly and quietly approached the rabbit.
However, even with such caution, the rabbit still detected some movement. At that moment, Pan Mengyan was only about three or four meters away from the rabbit. Sensing that it was about to flee, she immediately sprinted forward without hesitation. She swiftly raised her stick and struck the rabbit hard. Fortunately, the blow accurately hit the rabbit’s head, and it fell to the ground, motionless.
Pan Mengyan carefully approached the rabbit and examined its condition. She noticed blood flowing from its mouth and nose, indicating that it was likely dead. She then began searching for some vines to tie the rabbit’s limbs. After some effort, she successfully bound the rabbit’s limbs tightly together and hung it from one end of the stick. Hoisting the other end of the stick over her shoulder, she easily carried the rabbit on her back. The rabbit weighed about three or four pounds, which, while somewhat heavy for Pan Mengyan, was still manageable.
They continued exploring but dared not venture too far, as this place was filled with unknown dangers. The two women walked cautiously, limiting their activities to within approximately one hundred meters of the cave. They carefully observed their surroundings, searching for usable resources. After some effort, they successfully gathered some vines and stones. These materials would be brought back to the cave to craft essential tools for better handling future expeditions.
Pan Mengyan checked the time and felt it was about time to return, saying, “Let’s head back now. My stomach is already growling.” Jiang Ruoxi nodded in agreement. The two retraced their path back, chatting and laughing along the way, their moods noticeably lighter. Halfway back, they picked the plantains they had spotted earlier, with Jiang Ruoxi carrying them as they continued toward the cave.
Brimming with the joy of their harvest, they quickened their pace and soon arrived back at the cave. Upon entering, both felt an inexplicable sense of relief. Though conditions here were rudimentary, it served as a relatively safe shelter. They set down their belongings, rested briefly on the stone stools, and then began discussing their next steps.
