Chapter 10: You Bastard
As soon as Gu Bei finished speaking, he turned around and saw me, freezing completely on the spot. I walked over coldly and snatched the phone from his hand.
No wonder I couldn’t find a job all day no one was willing to hire me. So, it was all he did.
“Jiang Ruohe, you bastard! You set me up!”
Instead of showing any guilt for his wrongdoing, he confidently acknowledged it with an “Mm-hmm,” which instantly made my blood boil.
“Jiang Ruohe, who do you think you are? Do you really think Nan City is your domain? I refuse to believe I can’t find a job…”
Jiang Ruohe let out a cold laugh.
“Fine then, Yu Xiaowan. If you can find a job in Nan City, I’ll reduce the two hundred thousand to one hundred thousand.”
“Do you mean it?”
I had been waiting for him to say those words. I truly didn’t believe Jiang Ruohe had that much power. Nan City was huge how could everyone possibly fear him?
“I mean it.”
After hanging up, I shot a cold glare at Gu Bei. Tian Rong, standing nearby, kept cursing him for being despicable. I gave him a sharp look and tossed the phone back to him.
“Let’s go, sis.”
After just a few steps, Tian Rong stopped, her eyes red as she looked at me.
“Xiao Wan, seeing you bullied like this by Jiang Ruohe breaks my heart. I feel so useless like your sister, unable to help you at all.”
“Sis, don’t be sad. You’ve already been more than good to me. If I find a job, he’ll reduce the debt by a hundred thousand. I will definitely succeed.”
“But if Jiang Ruohe uses the Jiang family’s influence, I’m afraid no one would dare…” Tian Rong looked at me with concern.
“Sis, don’t worry. Nan City is big, and I really don’t believe it’s Jiang Ruohe’s territory. There must be companies that don’t care about the Jiang family.”
I took Tian Rong’s hand and reassured her that I would find a job.
But sometimes, reality is cruel. After three consecutive days of job hunting, no company dared to hire me, which left me feeling disheartened.
When Tian Rong called, I was sitting dejectedly on a park bench, staring at my resume.
“Xiao Wan, I’ve been thinking it over carefully. We can’t win against Jiang Ruohe. You should apologize to him and say something nice. After all, you’re his wife. Maybe if he’s pleased, he won’t make you repay the money.”
“Don’t blame me for saying this. Seeing you face rejection everywhere hurts me so much.” Tian Rong sobbed as she spoke.
“It’s alright, sis. Don’t worry about me. I won’t give up so easily.”
Truthfully, if I just apologized to Grandpa and explained the situation, he would forgive me. However, I didn’t want Jiang Ruohe to look down on me. I had to repay this money through my own efforts.
After hanging up, I gazed into the distance, feeling somewhat lost, but I silently cheered myself on. “Yu Xiaowan, you have to believe in yourself. You must not fall.”
Just then, my phone rang again. Looking down, the name on the caller ID was painfully glaring. I took a deep breath and answered.
“Found a job yet?” His tone was full of contempt.
My face darkened as I insisted that I would find one.
“Twenty-six days left. One of my clients said your skin is quite fair. He offered two hundred thousand to sleep with you for one night…”
“Jiang Ruohe, you bastard!” I hung up immediately, furious, and stood up from the bench.
After regaining my composure, I picked up my resume and prepared to continue my job search when I suddenly heard someone shouting that a child had fallen into the water. I rushed to the lakeside and saw a foreign girl about five or six years old struggling in the river. Without hesitation, I jumped in.
The icy river water made me shiver, and I suddenly remembered the doctor’s warning upon my discharge from the hospital that I should avoid cold water. But there was no time to dwell on that now I quickly swam toward the little girl.
After we made it ashore, the crowd began performing CPR on the girl. I slowly retreated from the gathering and intended to leave, but as soon as I turned around, I collided with a solid figure. Before I could even see who, it was, my vision went black, and I fainted.
