Chapter 12: Unfriendly Visitor
When Jiang Ruohe learned that the person who hired me was Xiao Shi, he was momentarily stunned before pulling out his phone to dial Xiao Shi’s number.
“President Xiao, this is Jiang Ruohe. We need to talk.”
After hearing whatever the other party said, Jiang Ruohe’s face darkened. Hanging up the phone, he cast a cold glance at me.
“Yu Xiaowan, you really have some skills to make Xiao Shi hire you. Did you sell yourself behind my back?”
I glared at him angrily, knowing that nothing decent ever came out of his mouth, then suppressed the fury in my eyes.
“If that’s what you think, then so be it. Anyway, I’ve found a job. The two hundred thousand is now one hundred thousand.”
Jiang Ruohe suddenly stepped forward and stared intently at me. I quickly retreated two steps back.
“Yu Xiaowan, you’re truly despicable.”
Suppressing my anger, I looked at him indifferently.
“All thanks to President Jiang’s brilliant suggestion.”
Jiang Ruohe suddenly grabbed my chin, flames flickering in his eyes.
“Are you tired of living?”
“I don’t know why you’re so angry. Weren’t you the one who told me to sell myself, saying I didn’t need to worry about tarnishing the Jiang Family’s reputation…”Jiang Ruohe, with you being so unusual, have you fallen for me?”
Anger flashed in Jiang Ruohe’s eyes as he released my chin and looked at me coldly.
“A vicious woman like you could never catch my eye. But I warn you, don’t think just because you have Xiao Shi as your backing that you can celebrate too early. There are still twenty-four days left.”
“No need to remind me.” I glanced at him and went upstairs.
The next day, I reported to Minghua Company. Worried about being fired, I remained tense and cautious at work, barely daring to speak more than a few words.
Xiao Shi stood before me, handed me a cup of coffee, and smiled faintly, telling me not to be too nervous.
“How can I not be nervous? If I get fired and can’t repay the money, I’ll be forever trampled under Jiang Ruohe’s feet,” I muttered quietly.
“What are you saying?” Xiao Shi looked at me.
I quickly said that I thought I should still be careful and diligent in my work, not causing him any trouble.
Three days passed quietly like this. During these three days, I worked during the day and continued looking for part-time jobs after work, since I was still fifty thousand short.
Although no one wanted me temporarily, I still believed I would encounter kind people like Xiao Shi.
Jiang Ruohe hadn’t returned home these three days. Tian Rong called me, saying she saw Jiang Ruohe taking care of Huang Minwei in the hospital again. His attentive manner made other patients think Huang Minwei was his wife.
“Sis, don’t be angry. That’s their business, it has nothing to do with me.”
After chatting with Tian Rong for a while, I stopped in front of a bar and noticed they were hiring a piano player. Though I knew they might reject me due to Jiang Ruohe’s influence, I still wanted to try. To my surprise, the bar hired me, making me quite happy.
“I’m Han Ming, the manager here.”
Han Ming said I only needed to play piano for two hours each night, with a monthly salary of ten thousand. Sometimes if I played well, customers might give tips, so earning twenty to thirty thousand a month shouldn’t be a problem.
“Don’t worry, this is a legitimate bar with many security personnel.” You won’t need to worry about customer harassment,” Han Ming smiled at me.
“Then I’ll come to work tomorrow night.”
When I returned home, I unexpectedly saw Wang Yingzhi, who never visited, sitting on the sofa. She stood up happily upon seeing me return.
“Aunt Liu, go fetch the ceremonial dress I bought for Xiao Wan and have her try it on.”
Faced with Wang Yingzhi’s sudden show of kindness, I didn’t feel particularly honored. Seeing her smiling at me reminded me of four words” beware of Greeks bearing gifts.”
