Chapter 14: Just a Laughingstock of the Jiang Family
All eyes fell on me with strange expressions. I calmly met Wang Yingzhi’s gaze, a faint smile curling at the corners of my lips. For a woman from a wealthy family, she certainly didn’t hesitate to use despicable means to frame me just to get Huang Minwei into the household.
Suddenly, I felt a chill on the back of my neck. Turning around, I saw Jiang Yichen had already snatched the necklace from my neck, her face filled with rage. I reached out to grab it back, but she took several steps backward.
“This is mine. Give it back,” I said coldly.
“Heh, this is the necklace I bought for my aunt.”
“Have you ever seen such a foolish thief? Stealing a necklace only to flaunt it around the neck instead of hiding it?” I retorted.
Jiang Yichen was momentarily speechless. The other socialites continued to watch the drama unfold, utterly indifferent to the truth.
“Maybe you did it on purpose wearing it around your neck to claim it as yours. But let me tell you, this necklace cost me three hundred thousand. Someone as poor as you could never afford it,” Jiang Yichen declared, looking down on me with an air of superiority.
“If you didn’t steal it, how else could you have gotten it? Can you even afford it?”
My face turned pale as I struggled to suppress the fury burning inside me. I reminded myself that even if my status was humble, I still deserved dignity.
“I can’t afford it, but this necklace is genuinely mine. It’s engraved with the letters ‘CY’.”
Jiang Yichen glanced at the necklace, then quickly looked up at Jiang Ting, her eyes pleading for help.
“Yichen, give the necklace back to her. Yu Xiaowan, I’m curious how did you came by this necklace?” Jiang Ting’s gaze shifted to me. I had to admit; she was a shrewd woman. Not only did she change the subject, but she effortlessly covered up Jiang Yichen and Wang Yingzhi’s attempt to frame me, making everyone present wonder how someone of my lowly status could possess such an expensive necklace.
Jiang Yichen still didn’t return the necklace to me and repeated her mother’s question, waiting for my response.
“Because what I have is a replica.”
I still vividly remember when Chen Xi placed this necklace around my neck. He said that although he couldn’t afford the real one at the time, he would work hard to ensure we lived a happy life in the future.
When you love someone, you don’t care whether their gift is rare or cheap. Besides, this necklace was the only thing Chen Xi left me.
“Give it back to me,” I demanded icily.
Jiang Yichen sneered at my answer, remarking, “So it’s a fake, after all.”
“If it’s a fake, why are you even wearing it?” With a flick of her wrist, she tossed the necklace into the nearby fountain. I lunged at her like a madwoman, shoving her aside.
“That’s mine! Who gave you the right to throw it away?” I screamed at her.
I hurried into the fountain, bending over with red-rimmed eyes as I frantically searched for my necklace. The icy water seeped into my heart. Sometimes, the more desperate you are, the harder it is to find what you’re looking for.
“It’s just a fake. Seriously, I’ll give you a hundred bucks for it. Aunt, I’m tired,” Jiang Yichen said.
Wang Yingzhi walked to the edge of the fountain and glared at me angrily.
“If it’s something worthless, stop making a scene. Get out now, and I’ll buy you eight or ten of them when we get back.”
I had no energy to deal with Wang Yingzhi at that moment. All I wanted was to find my necklace as quickly as possible.
“It’s getting late, and I’m quite tired. Let’s get together another time,” Jiang Ting said to the socialites.
When I found the necklace, I noticed Wang Yingzhi still standing by the pool, glaring at me angrily.
“You’ve completely humiliated me today.”
I walked out dripping wet and looked at her.
“Mom, if you want to make things difficult for me, there’s no need to do it in front of others. All it does is make the Jiang Family laughingstock.”
