Chapter 8: Escape
After moving, Luo Nanchu only needed to walk about ten minutes to reach the hospital every day.
She changed into her white coat in the office and sat at her workstation organizing documents. Her supervising teacher was notoriously strict, privately nicknamed “Master Extinction” by them.
While everyone was still gathered chatting, someone sharp-eyed noticed Zhou Man’s shoes and immediately signaled with their eyes, whispering:
“Master Extinction is here.”
In a flash, everyone scattered.
Zhou Man snorted coldly and called everyone back.
“Finished all your training materials? Everyone has too much free time?”
Luo Nanchu lowered her head and quietly stood at the end of the line, minimizing her presence.
Although Zhou Man was famously strict, she was genuinely an excellent doctor and supervising teacher.
The hospital had over ten floors, each housing different departments.
Only in the gynecology department did family members enter smiling and leave smiling.
In her previous life, after performing the abortion surgery for Song Feiwan,
media reporters deliberately guided public opinion, and Luo Nanchu was accused of negligence, of intentionally making a mistake aborting Song Feiwan’s baby.
Facing external pressure and the buried doubts in her heart –
doubts about whether the child in Song Feiwan’s womb Fu Hansheng’s was –
That was when Luo Nanchu first experienced despair.
Under the pressure of public opinion, she was forced to suspend her duties.
It was the seemingly cold and ruthless Zhou Man who stepped forward to comfort her, arguing vehemently for her in the dean’s office.
“Nan Chu is my trainee. I know her better than anyone.”
“She couldn’t possibly have any reason to frame Song Feiwan.”
The dean glanced at Luo Nanchu with a complicated expression, which Luo Nanchu naturally noticed.
The dean sighed softly.
“It’s an order from above.”
“The person backing Song Feiwan Nan Chu, you can’t afford to offend them.”
Luo Nanchu understood then that the person she couldn’t afford to offend was Fu Hansheng.
Zhou Man’s eyes flickered as she looked at Luo Nanchu.
After leaving the dean’s office, Zhou Man looked at Luo Nanchu and held her hand.
“Nan Chu, I know you did your best.”
Luo Nanchu forced a smile.
“Teacher, you don’t need to worry about me.”
“I’m fine.”
Therefore, when seeing Zhou Man again, Luo Nanchu felt gratitude and respect in her heart.
Although Zhou Man appeared cold-faced and handled matters strictly without mercy,
She was extremely protective of her own in front of outsiders.
After finishing her lecture, Zhou Man finally said:
“If you want to stay here, prove yourselves worthy.”
With that, she dismissed everyone.
Luo Nanchu was singled out to stay behind.
“Luo Nanchu, come with me on rounds.”
“The rest of you, go do what you need to do.”
Zhou Man walked while reviewing patient records in her hand.
“What’s the normal range for fetal heart monitoring?”
These questions seemed engraved in Luo Nanchu’s mind as she answered immediately:
“The normal baseline fetal heart rate is 110-160 beats per minute, with acceleration during fetal movement.”
Zhou Man nodded.
“Yesterday, Bed 1 in Room 14 had postpartum hemorrhage.”
“Tell me the four main causes of postpartum hemorrhage?”
Luo Nanchu replied, “Following the 4T principle: uterine tone, tissue retention or invasion, trauma to the soft birth canal, and thrombin coagulation dysfunction.”
Zhou Man closed the file folder and gave a soft “hmm.”
“Good.”
Following behind Zhou Man, when encountering special cases during rounds, Zhou Man would first ask for Luo Nanchu’s opinion before explaining the reasons.
Realizing that Zhou Man wasn’t as iron-hearted as she seemed, Luo Nanchu’s fear of her diminished.
Returning to the department, a fellow intern asked her:
“Congratulations on surviving under the Abbess.”
“When she called you earlier, we were terrified. Good thing she only asked you to join rounds.”
Luo Nanchu shrugged with a light laugh.
During her commute home, Fu Hansheng called again.
“Really don’t want these things anymore?”
Luo Nanchu frowned.
“Dispose of them as you wish.”
Suddenly, Fu Hansheng’s cool voice pierced her ears.
“Look up.”
Luo Nanchu raised her eyes to see the man aloof and elegant leaning against his car, his tall figure drawing repeated glances from passing patients and nurses.
Fu Hansheng stood out in the crowd.
His height made him particularly conspicuous.
The setting sun cast his silhouette long, highlighting his straight nose and clean jawline.
His expressionless face created an air of detachment.
A slight smile tugged at Fu Hansheng’s lips as he softly called her name.
“Luo Nanchu.”
At the sight of him, Nanchu froze momentarily.
Not wanting to meet Fu Hansheng, she turned and walked in another direction.
Of course, Fu Hansheng wouldn’t relent.
With long strides, he closed the distance and appeared at her side.
“Running away?”
Unwilling to cause a scene in public or risk being seen by colleagues, Nanchu got into the car.
She paused briefly at the passenger seat before noticing Fu Hansheng already in the driver’s position, then opened the rear door behind it instead.
On the seat lay the box of gifts she’d left at Fu Hansheng’s apartment.
Fu Hansheng said,
“You don’t want any of the presents I gave you?”
Luo Nanchu nodded.
“Mm.”
Fu Hansheng let out a low chuckle.
The sound seemed to reverberate in Nanchu’s chest.
Through the mirror, she caught sight of Fu Hansheng’s narrow, intense eyes.
He was watching her gaze just as intently.
They held eye contact in the confined space of the car for a long moment.
In that instant, Nanchu remembered the coldness in Fu Hansheng’s tears when they fell into the sea.
His face had been filled with fury.
That look had been too heavy for her, impossible to forget.
Nanchu trembled slightly and averted her eyes to look out the window.
Clutching the box, she opened the car door.
“I’ll take these with me.”
Fu Hansheng immediately got out as well, grasping her slender arm.
“Don’t you have anything to say?”
Luo Nanchu pressed her lips into a polite smile and thanked him courteously.
“Thank you.”
Watching her feigned smile, Fu Hansheng’s gaze cooled, and he fell silent.
The contents of that single box alone were worth millions.
Inside where jewels Fu Hansheng had given her.
Along with several haute couture gowns.
“Where did you move to?”
“Get back in the car. I’ll take you.”
Luo Nanchu shook her head without hesitation.
“No need.”
“It’s quite close. I can manage on my own.”
Fu Hansheng released her arm, his tone leaving no room for argument.
“Get in the car.”
Nanchu glanced at him, her voice softening slightly.
“Really, it’s not necessary. It’s very close.”
Fu Hansheng raised an eyebrow and stepped closer.
“Luo Nanchu, since when have you been so polite?”
Indeed, she used to cling to Fu Hansheng’s every move.
Fearful of other women appearing by his side.
She had racked her brains to please him.
Until that moment they fell into the sea, and their eyes met Luo Nanchu understood. No matter how much she did, it could never compared to Song Feiwan.
Song Feiwan didn’t need to lift a finger for Fu Hansheng to adore her.
Catching sight of a colleague out of the corner of her eye, Nanchu quickly slipped back into the car.
Letting out a soft sigh of relief.
Noticing her movement, Fu Hansheng got in as well.
“Where did you move to?”
Luo Nanchu obediently reported the address.
“Scenery Garden Apartments.”
