After a full day of work on Saturday, Su Hao fell asleep the moment she touched the bed. She had planned to sleep in on Sunday, but early in the morning her phone rang—it was Zhang Xian, telling her to come to the office.
Still half-asleep, Su Hao sat up and asked, “Sister Zhang Xian, what happened?”
“You’ll know when you get here,” Zhang Xian replied. Her tone was as stern and emotionless as ever.
Su Hao had no choice but to agree. To be honest, she had worked alone until very late the night before and was both exhausted and slightly resentful. Still, she had personally calculated and organized the final data, and nothing appeared to be wrong.
Now they were even taking up her day off.
She sat on the edge of the bed for a while to steady herself, then got up. She had originally planned to make soup dumplings, but there was no time now.
After washing up, she hastily ate some bread, grabbed her bag, and headed to the company.
The building was far quieter than the day before. On Saturday there had at least been some people around; on Sunday, the lobby was nearly empty, with only cleaning staff polishing the floors. The waiting area was spotless.
Su Hao took the elevator straight to the sixteenth floor.
It was just as quiet there. Only the finance office door was open, the blinds raised. Someone was inside.
Chen Yu stood in front of the safe, head lowered, silent. Zhang Xian stood nearby with her arms crossed. Lu Mimi spun lazily in her chair, looking completely detached.
The moment Su Hao entered, Zhang Xian pointed at her.
“Come here.”
Su Hao walked over.
A cash box lay open on the table. Some money had been taken out on Friday, and less than sixty thousand yuan remained.
Zhang Xian counted the bills. “Six hundred is missing.”
She turned to Chen Yu.
Chen Yu kept her head down and murmured, “I didn’t touch it yesterday. The last time was before getting off work on Friday. I planned to deposit it on Monday.”
Su Hao frowned.
A bad feeling crept up.
Lu Mimi stood up and asked bluntly, “Su Hao, you didn’t touch it yesterday, did you?”
As expected, this was aimed at her.
Everyone knew Su Hao had put a check into the safe before leaving work yesterday. She was the last person to touch the safe—and there were no outsiders present.
Su Hao glanced at the money. “I didn’t touch it.”
“You say you didn’t, and that’s it?” Lu Mimi shot back immediately.
Su Hao fell silent.
Zhang Xian tapped the desk. “Then the two of you will share the loss.”
“I don’t agree,” Su Hao said firmly.
“If you do this job, you take responsibility,” Zhang Xian snapped. Chen Yu had already admitted fault and agreed to take responsibility. With frequent cash use by procurement and reimbursements, mistakes could happen. But Su Hao refusing outright only made her look worse.
Lu Mimi raised an eyebrow. “If you don’t agree, what can you do? Can you find the missing six hundred?”
Su Hao took a breath, then looked at the security camera.
“Check the surveillance.”
“Even if we check it, you still touched the safe yesterday,” Lu Mimi pressed. Zhang Xian didn’t stop her. After all, it was only six hundred yuan—splitting it would be easy, and checking surveillance would mean reporting upward.
Su Hao shook her head. “Check it. I didn’t do anything wrong, and I won’t take responsibility.”
She knew exactly what was happening. Chen Yu was the primary person responsible, but if Su Hao paid, she would become the main bearer of fault. In the future, any similar issue would be pushed onto her.
“Su Hao!” Zhang Xian snapped, frustrated.
Lu Mimi scoffed. “If you can’t afford it, just say so. I’ll pay for you.”
“That’s not the point,” Su Hao said calmly. She pulled out her phone and looked up President Zeng’s number. “Sister Zhang Xian, should I call him, or will you?”
Zhang Xian stared at her for several seconds, then turned away to get her phone.
Five minutes later, she hung up. “President Zeng will come to unlock the surveillance.”
Only executives at his level could access it.
Su Hao finally relaxed a little and leaned against the desk, flipping through the ledger. If the surveillance showed nothing, did that mean the money had been miscounted during a transaction?
Twenty minutes later, heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway.
A tall, handsome man walked in with a cigarette between his lips. His sharp eyes swept over the room, pausing on Su Hao for a few extra seconds.
He flicked ash into a disposable cup and asked coolly, “What time frame do you want?”
His presence was commanding.
Everyone froze.
No one had expected Zhou Yang to be the one who came.
“President Zhou… why trouble you?” Zhang Xian asked stiffly.
“Passing by,” Zhou Yang replied casually, already opening the system.
When no one answered, his tone turned light but cold. “Speak.”
Su Hao said, “From Thursday to today.”
Zhou Yang glanced at her, then unlocked the footage with his fingerprint.
“Watch it yourselves. Zhang Xian, report the results to me later.”
He turned to leave, then stopped at the door.
“By the way,” he said lightly, tapping the doorframe, “Su Hao didn’t touch the cash yesterday. I was there.”
The room went silent.
Su Hao explained calmly, “President Zhou came back to handle something and saw I was still working. He checked in.”
Lu Mimi gave her a long look, then scoffed and said nothing.
The surveillance confirmed it. Su Hao had only put items into the safe, never taken anything out.
She was cleared.
Later, reviewing Friday’s footage, Su Hao pointed out that Chen Yu had taken money twice during a single transaction.
Silence fell.
Chen Yu herself had forgotten.
In the end, Zhang Xian ordered Chen Yu to retrieve the money herself—or bear the loss alone.
With nothing left for her to do, Su Hao grabbed her bag and left.
Downstairs, messages popped up.
Her sister asked her to come home.
Zhou Yang messaged too:
Waiting downstairs. Don’t just leave after I help you.
Su Hao replied simply: Thank you.
She hesitated, then waited.
Zhou Yang drove her home. Along the way, tension simmered.
He accused her of lying about sleeping.
She told him bluntly, “You know I didn’t reply on purpose.”
His pride was clearly bruised.
When he leaned too close, she warned him calmly, “If you keep this up, I’m getting out of the car.”
Later, she thanked him again—softly—before getting out without looking back.
Zhou Yang stayed in the car, staring after her.
He wasn’t stupid.
Her heart wasn’t with him anymore.
Later, at home, he overheard her sister advising her to keep distance from men who pursued her—and to choose Shen He instead.
Zhou Yang said nothing.
But when his mother whispered in his ear—
“Don’t fall for her. You don’t stand a chance.”
He didn’t deny it.
