Han Jingyun couldn’t breathe. She struggled desperately.
“Help… let… go…”
At the very last second before she suffocated, Huo Junfeng flung her to the floor.
Snot and tears covered Han Jingyun’s face. All the sharp, capable composure she once had was gone. She crawled over in utter disgrace and clutched Huo Junfeng’s leg.
“Yuanzhou, you should face reality. He Yanzi is already dead…”
Huo Junfeng remained silent.
Thinking she still had a chance, Han Jingyun hurried on.
“She’s just a child — immature, naive, pampered, and overly sentimental. Ask your own heart: can you really accept spending your whole life with someone like that? Comforting her for a lifetime — wouldn’t you get tired?”
Huo Junfeng still said nothing.
Han Jingyun felt she had persuaded him and forced herself to stay energized.
“We are the truly compatible ones. Our family backgrounds match. We share the same values and interests. Whether we talk about life or business, we never run out of things to say, don’t we? Otherwise, why would you have slept with me in the first place?”
“Admit it. You and I are meant for each other. You fell for me a long time ago, Junfeng!”
Huo Junfeng’s voice was flat, without the slightest emotion.
“Are you done?”
Han Jingyun sensed something was wrong, but forced herself not to think about it.
“Junfeng, I really love you! You love me too — you just haven’t realized it yet…”
Before she could finish—
Bang!
Huo Junfeng kicked her away.
Han Jingyun flew more than a meter through the air and slammed into the wall before stopping.
Her whole body felt as if it were falling apart. She was in so much pain that she couldn’t utter a single word.
Huo Junfeng walked up to her, bent down, and said coldly,
“I only ever treated you as a toy. From beginning to end, I never once thought about leaving Yanyan. She is the one I love.”
“Han Jingyun, you told me to make Yanyan grow up, saying it was for my own good and for her good. I trusted you — that was my mistake. But you never should have bullied her behind my back. And you never should have caused her death.”
“You’re right about one thing. Yanyan is dead — and she died horribly…”
He paused slightly, a trace of pain flashing through his eyes.
“She didn’t even leave behind a complete body.”
Han Jingyun’s heart tightened.
Then she heard him pronounce her sentence in a calm, almost casual tone:
“Don’t worry. I won’t let you die. Letting you die would be far too easy on you. I want you to live from now on — in a state worse than death.”
The Chu family would no longer protect her.
The business empire she had built with her own hands had already been destroyed, and she was now buried in debt.
But in Huo Junfeng’s eyes, none of that was enough.
Han Jingyun shuddered.
“Junfeng…”
She tried to say something more, but when she looked up, what she saw was Huo Junfeng staring at her as if she were a pile of filthy, rotten flesh.
She froze, knowing there was no longer any chance left for her.
Suddenly, Han Jingyun burst out laughing in bitter mockery.
“You took revenge on Xue Panpan. You took revenge on Yao Hongtao. And in the end, you came to take revenge on me — saying that I caused He Yanzi’s death!”
“But Huo Junfeng, who really killed her?”
“If it weren’t for your silent approval, would He Yanzi have taken that role that cost her life?”
“You personally made her sign that contract. You personally sent her to the film set!”
“You were her husband. You are the real culprit!”
“You go mad taking revenge on all of us, wanting me to live a fate worse than death — but the person you should hate the most is yourself!”
“The one who betrayed He Yanzi was you. And the one who killed her was also you!”
Huo Junfeng said expressionlessly,
“Get out.”
The bodyguards came in and dragged Han Jingyun away.
The room fell silent.
Huo Junfeng murmured softly,
“Yanyan… do you hate me? I really deserve to die…”
He took out two copies of the divorce agreement that had already been signed and slowly tore them into shreds.
He collapsed onto the floor in utter disarray, letting the fragments rain down over his body.
“Yanyan, I never wanted to divorce you. I know I was wrong. Come back…”
“As long as you come back, I’ll do anything.”
“We can be like before… alright?”
The only answer was deathly silence.
After a long time, Huo Junfeng finally let out a sound that was half laughter, half sob.
“I know… you’ll never forgive me.”
That was why, all this time since she died, she had never once appeared in his dreams.
A broken sob escaped his throat. He told someone to bring him strong liquor.
But even when he was drunk, he still never saw He Yanzi.
He lay sprawled on the floor in a drunken haze, not knowing what year or month it was, not knowing where he was, nor what he should do — or what he still could do.
Until his parents kicked the door open and shouted harshly,
“Huo Junfeng!”
Huo Junfeng lay drunk on the floor. He only let out a hiccup and said nothing.
His father scolded angrily,
“Huo Junfeng, have you lost your mind? Look at the state you’re in — neither human nor ghost! Have you thrown all your responsibilities out the window? So many people depend on you for their livelihoods! Don’t forget — you’re only sitting in this position because so many people support you. If you won’t do it, plenty of others are eager to take your place!”
Huo Junfeng stirred slightly.
His mother could hardly bear it anymore.
Her son had been gifted from childhood. He had attended the best schools, entered the most prestigious universities, and returned from overseas studies with outstanding achievements. After joining the company, several of his major decisions had been bold yet perfectly timed, pushing the Huo Group’s stagnant business territory to an entirely new level.
He had become the head of the Huo family’s generation not merely because of family backing and senior support — everyone truly admired and trusted him.
They believed he would lead the Huo family to even greater heights.
He had always been the calmest and most rational decision-maker. When had he ever looked like this?
“Junfeng, you have to pull yourself together. Abandoning yourself like this is completely useless, isn’t it?”
She thought of the girl from the He family.
To be honest, she had never believed that girl was suitable to be the wife of the head of the Huo family.
But Huo Junfeng had insisted on it and never asked for anyone’s consent.
Moreover, he had been single for more than thirty years and had never shown any romantic interest. Some people even mocked him behind his back, wondering whether there was something wrong with his sexual orientation. His mother had once secretly worried about that as well.
So long as he was willing to marry at all, that was already a relief.
She and the other elders hardly dared interfere, afraid that he might truly remain unmarried for life.
After the marriage, the young woman from the He family had never done anything improper, nor had she ever brought any negative influence to the Huo Group.
Gradually, his mother accepted this daughter-in-law.
Who would have thought that she would suddenly be gone?
And her once-praised son had completely collapsed into this miserable state…
With deep anguish, his mother said,
“Junfeng, if Yanyan were still alive, she wouldn’t want to see you like this.”
Huo Junfeng suddenly opened his bloodshot eyes.
He murmured,
“Yes… if I drink myself to death like this, Yanyan will only hate me even more…”
“I have to go and atone for my sins.”
