Chapter 2 Half happy and half sad.
The hypocrisy in those words was so blatant that even the third son of the Gu family scoffed.
The second son of the Gu family awkwardly pursed his lips, realizing he had gone too far, and quickly changed the subject.
“Dad, which family did you find for Youyou? Is the other party easy to get along with? With Youyou’s condition, if the other party isn’t easy to get along with, I’m afraid she’ll suffer after marrying into that
family.” Gu Youyou listened quietly. Earlier, when she overheard her grandfather saying he wanted to marry her off, she thought the same as her two uncles: with her conditions, who would agree to this marriage unless they were tricked?
She’s practically halfway to the grave; which unlucky guy wants to marry her? This is clearly a deal that will cost her both her future wife and her coffin money. So when the second son of the Gu family asked this question, she was also very curious.
On the east side, hearing that Gu Lao Er had finally spoken a sensible word, Old Master Gu’s expression softened somewhat. He simply said, “The Jin family at the north end of the village, although they don’t own any land, they are at least hunters. And he’s the only one in his family. As long as he doesn’t look down on Youyou, she won’t suffer too much.”The Jin family? Hunters surnamed Jin? Gu Youyou was completely confused, not knowing anything about the Jin family.
She had been here for half a year, eavesdropping for half a year, but hadn’t heard any gossip about the Jin family. It seemed that the Jin family was also low-key.
‘Hiss!’ Gu Lao Er and Gu Lao San gasped. So it was him. That makes sense.
This Jin Zijin wasn’t originally from this village. He came to Lianhua Village from outside five years ago. He came alone and often hunted in the mountains behind Lianhua Village. Later, he settled down here.
When he first arrived, he was a handsome young man. Many young girls in the village were interested in him, but in the end, they all looked down on him because he was poor, and none of them worked out.
Now, five years have passed. Not long ago, they saw him selling his game in town. He’s a far cry from his former handsome self; now he’s a disheveled middle-aged man with a slovenly beard.Besides, he’s so poor he only owns a thatched hut, no land, and at his age, how could he possibly find a proper wife? If they wanted a respectable girl from a good family, Gu Youyou would be the only option.
His conditions are worse, but Gu Youyou’s are even worse, so they naturally wouldn’t mind.
They hurriedly said, “Good, good, I think that hunter Jin is honest and upright; Youyou won’t lose out by marrying him.”
Old Master Gu was furious at his sons’ behavior. He knew their ulterior motives perfectly well.
Let alone letting Youyou marry Jin Zijin, this penniless bachelor, even if the other party’s conditions were worse, they would applaud as long as he was willing. They wouldn’t have to take care of a sick man anymore, and they’d save money on a coffin—of course, they couldn’t be happier.
However, he wasn’t about to let their plans succeed. He impatiently said, “Alright, stop with the nonsense. I’m just informing you. Go back and tell your wives that Youyou is getting married in three days. Make sure to prepare her dowry properly.”
Gu Lao Er and Gu Lao San were startled. They had been beaming with joy just moments before, but their expressions changed upon hearing about the dowry.
Gu Lao Er blinked in surprise and asked, “Dowry? What dowry?” Gu Lao San, much more astute than Gu Lao Er, quickly said, “Father, three days is too rushed. We should wait
until Mother comes back before deciding!”
