Chapter 3: Favoritism to the Extremes
In this family, for some reason, Old Master Gu stubbornly favored Gu Youyou, a sickly girl. But their mother was different; she hated Gu Youyou the most. Even if Gu Youyou were to be married off, there would be no dowry, as long as their mother was home.
Old Master Gu glared fiercely at Gu Laosan and snorted, “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to. I’m going to get this marriage done while my wife’s not around. Anyone who dares to let her hear this news will forget about getting a share of the family land!”
Gu Laoer and Gu Laosan: “…” How did they end up with such a father? His favoritism was down to the bone.
After saying that, he glared at Gu Lao Er and said, “As for the dowry, it’s the dowry that Youyou’s mother brought. Don’t play dumb with me.”
“Oh, no!” Gu Lao Er was immediately shocked. This was something that would cost them a lot of money. Gu Lao Er was unwilling to agree and hurriedly said, “Father, Youyou has been sick for ten years. All the dowry left by my sister-in-law has been used for Youyou’s medical treatment. Where is there any dowry left now?”
Old Master Gu was so angry that he trembled and said, “Can so much dowry be used up? What about the medical expenses that her uncle subsidizes every year? As her second uncle, do you want to covet what little she has? Take what you have, get out…”
Gu Lao Er wanted to say something more, but was grabbed by Gu Lao San and dragged out of the old man’s room.
As soon as they came out, Gu Lao Er (Second Brother) flew into a rage, yelling, “Third Brother, why are you pulling me? Father told us to hand over that brat’s dowry! We’ve served her for ten years, shouldn’t we get a little something?”
Gu Lao San (Third Brother) quickly covered his mouth and whispered, “Second Brother, are you confused? As long as we can marry that brat off, what’s a little loss? Father is getting old. Once he kicks the bucket, what our eldest brother and sister-in-law leave behind will be ours. As for the dowry, didn’t we all say she used it all up with her medicine? Father also said to take whatever amount we have, um…”
His sly reminder made Gu Lao Er realize. ”
Take whatever amount we have”—how much exactly? Wasn’t that up to them?
He immediately grinned, “Alright, Third Brother, you’re so clever!”Having overheard her grandfather and her two uncles’ gossip, Gu Youyou pouted and turned over.
She had been locked in this room for half a year, while the original owner had been locked up until death. For the past six months, no matter what she said, the Gu family wouldn’t let her out. All her attempts to escape this dark little room had failed, so she naturally wouldn’t object to this sudden opportunity.
Gu Youyou knew very well that if she didn’t leave this haunted house soon, she might really not survive.
A little while later, she heard voices coming from her second uncle and aunt’s room again.
Gu Youyou had been in this world for six months, and eavesdropping was her only pleasure; otherwise,
being locked up in this gloomy, tomb-like room all day would either kill her with illness or from the suffocation. Although the original owner’s body had been ill for ten years, it possessed astonishing hearing, practically super hearing. She could hear the corners of several nearby houses if she wanted to.
Therefore, although Gu Youyou hadn’t even touched the door of this house in six months, she knew everything about the village, things she should and shouldn’t know.
She also knew the secrets of the Gu family members and what kind of people her second and third uncles were.
She knew everything, except why the old man had gone crazy for the past two months, insisting on marrying her off.
