Chapter 4 You’re getting married in three days.
As far as she knew, her grandfather, Gu Feng, was the only person in the world who truly cared for her. She had overheard him say that he planned to raise her until she was in her coffin, so why did he suddenly change his mind?
Sigh, she couldn’t be bothered to think about it. Even if she were to die, dying in someone else’s house would at least save her family money on a coffin.
The nights were long and lonely; she slept all day, but how could she possibly sleep? She’d better continue eavesdropping.
Her third uncle and aunt were both shrewd people. After her third uncle told her about Gu Youyou’s upcoming marriage, the couple laughed for a long time before finally going to sleep. As
for the dowry, they had already discussed it: they would find some inexpensive items and pack a few extra boxes, just enough to look good on the surface; it wouldn’t cost much. As for the rest, once Gu Youyou was married, it would be completely none of her business.
Her second aunt’s situation was different.
As the saying goes, birds of a feather flock together; her second uncle and aunt’s stingy and opportunistic nature was a perfect match.
Upon hearing that Gu Youyou would need a dowry for her marriage, they were furious and cursed her until midnight. Their words were incredibly harsh, calling her a money-loser, saying she’d been eating and drinking for free at home for ten years while they served her like slaves, and that they’d have to pay for her coffin when she died, and now they had to provide a dowry for her marriage. They said
she must have owed them something in her past life to have been treated like a slave, and
that she was incredibly unlucky to have met someone like Gu Youyou. Gu Youyou scoffed. It was as if they were the ones who provided her dowry. Gu Youyou had heard it all—it was left to her by her deceased parents.
She’d heard this countless times, so she was indifferent, treating it as mere amusement.
The original Gu Youyou and she were somewhat connected; not only did they share the same name, but their parents died young, and they were even schemed against for their inheritance by their uncles and aunts. The difference was that the modern Gu Youyou was healthy, while this one was terminally ill!
…
Only a few beams of morning sunlight pierced through the cracks in the room, which was filled with mud. It was rare for even a few rays of light to shine through the ventilation holes. Gu Youyou sat up, staring blankly at those few beams of light.
The sound of a lock clicking shut told Gu Youyou that her breakfast had arrived, along with her daily medication.
As soon as the door opened, her second aunt’s sharp and sarcastic voice rang out.
“Oh, did the sun rise in the west today? You little devil, you even sat up by yourself. Since you’re so much better now, why don’t you go out and eat by yourself?”
Gu Youyou grinned, her dry, yellow hair gleaming, and said, “Okay.”
Aunt Huang Xiangwen immediately shut up upon hearing this, paused for a moment, and then said, “Little devil, dream on. Without the old man’s permission, I wouldn’t dare let you out on your own. If anything happens to you, you’ll blame me. Fine, I can’t take care of you for many more days anyway. After you marry into the Jin family in three days, he can cook porridge and bring you medicine.”
Huang couldn’t help but sneer. That hunter, whose head was probably slammed in a door, sometimes wouldn’t come back for ten days or half a month after going up the mountain. Wouldn’t you, a sickly girl, starve to death alone at home?
Gu Youyou feigned surprise and asked, “What? Marrying into the Jin family?”
Madam Huang chuckled, placing the porridge with a clatter on an old table beside the bed, and explained cheerfully, “I didn’t expect you to be so lucky! Even in your condition, someone still wants you. Your grandfather has arranged a good marriage for you. He’s a strong and healthy hunter, and you’ll be marrying him in three days. Be happy!
