Chapter 23: Does it hurt your hand?
Jin Zijing finished his work quickly, and the water in the iron kettle on Gu Youyou’s stove boiled.
He took out an earthenware bowl, poured in the water, placed it next to Gu Youyou, and continued working.
Watching Jin Zijing’s busy back, Gu Youyou felt that his rough-looking figure had become taller and more imposing, making her feel exceptionally safe!
Gu Youyou watched the whole process. It wasn’t that she couldn’t cook, but that she didn’t know how to cook with such outdated tools, so she watched very carefully.
If she recovered from her illness in the future, no matter where she went, she would have to cook for herself!
Although Lotus Village was surrounded by mountains on three sides, rice was the staple food. Moreover, outside the Lotus Tree, the terrain was hilly, and the villagers in this area all ate rice, so they still ate rice!
Even the largest pheasant was no bigger than a domestic chicken, and much thinner. With feathers and internal organs, it weighed only two or three pounds. After plucking and cleaning, there were hardly any pieces of meat left.
The meal, served without any other side dishes, saw the two of them finish the rice and the pheasant completely.
Although Gu Youyou was so sick she barely had the strength to walk, she ate without hesitation—and you could tell just how much she ate from how hungry she was.
She ate just as much as Jin Zijin, and the two of them devoured the soup like ravenous ghosts.
While clearing away the dishes, Jin Zijin said, “You’re sick, you can’t eat so much. I’ll get some vegetables for you tomorrow!”
Uh… Gu Youyou’s eyes were still fixed on the two rabbits; it seemed she wouldn’t be able to eat them tomorrow.
As the heir to a modern family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, Gu Youyou naturally understood these principles, but even understanding couldn’t stop her hunger! Her mouth overcame reason, so when there was food, she didn’t care about anything else, only indulging in a gluttonous feast.
“Okay!” Thinking about how she had eaten, Gu Youyou felt a little embarrassed.
The saying goes, “A full stomach gives you strength,” and this applied to Gu Youyou as well. Right now
, she felt full of energy. Well… only compared to her weak body.
The firewood in the stove had gone out, and it was completely dark. Jin Zijing’s house didn’t have oil lamps, so they lit a red candle that had burned halfway through the night before, providing some light in the room.
Jin Zijing put Gu Youyou back on the bed and got up to extinguish the candle!
Gu Youyou’s eyes remained fixed on the candle. Even though she had the soul of a modern person inside her, she knew that the red candle on their wedding night shouldn’t be blown out—it was considered unlucky.
Seeing the half-burnt candle, Gu Youyou guessed that Jin Zijing must have extinguished it as soon as she fell asleep last night.
So, he used it just for lighting? Wasn’t it said that people in ancient times were quite superstitious?
Since Jin Zijin was just a rough guy and his parents hadn’t taught him these things, she didn’t think much of it and just assumed he didn’t understand.
Jin Zijin’s bed was very narrow, probably only a single bed about 1.2 or 1.3 meters wide. Even though Gu Youyou was small and space-saving, Jin Zijin’s height made it feel quite cramped when he lay down.
Gu Youyou admired Jin Zijin’s mental fortitude more than once. Before seeing her appearance during the day, she hadn’t even seen her, but after seeing her, she was incredibly impressed.
She looked so scary, how could he be so heartless?
And now, he’s already leaning in. Goodness, isn’t it uncomfortable to hug him?
