Chapter 5: Deliberately Pouring Food.
“Heh, happy?”
Gu Youyou gave a forced smile, her eyes as cold as ice as she looked at the half-overflowing bowl of breakfast.
She was doing it on purpose, throwing it away instead of giving it to her.
She needed to eat more to get more nutrition, but her two aunts were no pushovers.
In front of her grandfather, they brought in the best food in the house, but she actually ate very little. Either they ate it themselves, leaving her only a few bites to keep her alive, or they smeared it all over her, making her feel sticky and miserable.
But in her own body, she could barely sit up, so she could only glare at them and scare them!
Well, as the saying goes, revenge is a dish best served cold. Now her chance to escape had come. Once she left this haunted house and stopped taking that medicine, she would get better, and then she could slowly get her revenge! Looking at Gu Youyou, Huang Shi had a gloating expression on her face. She smiled smugly at her and deliberately shouted outside, “Oh, Youyou, what are you doing? This porridge was cooked by your second aunt early this morning. Although our family is considered well-off in this village, we are still farmers after all, and we can’t afford for you to waste it like this!”
The whole family was sitting around the table eating in the front. Hearing Huang Shi’s complaints coming from the backyard, their faces were quite interesting.
Gu Lao Er knew his wife was doing this on purpose, so he immediately added fuel to the fire, feigning distress, “Oh dear, Dad, Youyou threw away her food again, didn’t she? I was watching from the kitchen just now.
Xiangwen said Youyou is getting married soon, so she should eat something good. That bowl of hers was just plain rice porridge.”
After saying that, he glanced disdainfully at the porridge in his own bowl, clattering his chopsticks in it, “Look at this, I still have to go to the fields to dig sweet potatoes later. With this watery soup, how am I supposed to have the strength? And she, on the other hand, does nothing all day but needs to be waited on, and when she throws a tantrum…” “He even poured out the porridge in his anger.”Old Master Gu’s face was very unpleasant. He slammed his chopsticks on the table and said sternly, “Second son, do you think I can’t control you with my old bones? If you’re lying in that room like Youyou, unable to move, don’t even mention digging sweet potatoes, I won’t let you do any work. I’ll personally serve you and feed you every meal.” Upon hearing
his roar, Second Brother Gu immediately dared not complain. He said in a low voice, “I wouldn’t dare, Father, how could I dare let you serve me?”
After saying that, he wisely took his bowl of clear porridge and squatted in the corner to drink it.
The old man had been very irritable lately, and he was really afraid that if he angered the old man, he would get less of the inheritance. The third son hadn’t said anything, but if he offended the old man, wouldn’t that be giving the third son a free ride?
Gu Laosan, ever the smooth-talker, stepped in to mediate, saying, “Father, it’s probably because Second Sister-in-law told Youyou about her marriage, and she’s upset. I’ll have Qiuju go in and talk to her in a bit. Don’t be angry; it’s not worth ruining your health.
“Qiuju was Gu Laosan’s wife, Meng Qiuju.
The couple exchanged a glance and understood. Meng Qiuju quickly added, “Yes, Father, I’ll go and talk to her
in a bit.” With someone offering advice, Old Master Gu’s expression softened. He sighed, “You’re all so understanding. Remember to make some of her favorite dishes and bring them in.”
With that, he stopped eating, grabbed his hoe, and headed out the door. Only
after he left did the family dare to eat heartily, finishing every last bite of the food.
