That afternoon, Class 1-3 had physical education class.
Everyone gathered outside, and as per routine, they had to run two laps first. The moment Jinian saw they had to run and noticed the blazing sun hanging in the sky, she felt utterly uncomfortable.
So, before the run, she shamelessly went to ask for leave.
“Teacher, I’m not feeling well today. I might not be able to participate in the run.”
The young and accomplished PE teacher glanced at Jinian and nodded. “In that case, rest well, Jinian.”
There were plenty of students who didn’t want to run, but no one dared to be the second to ask for leave. For a moment, they watched Jinian’s retreating figure with great indignation.
Jinian cut across the basketball court, and as she reached the three-point line, a basketball happened to roll to her feet.
“Junior, could you toss the ball over here?”
Clearly, the game hadn’t started yet, and it was uncertain whether the ball had rolled to her intentionally or accidentally. However, when Jinian looked up, the boy flicked his hair, seemingly trying to show off.
Well, athletic boys were always considered handsome, and she thought so too especially basketball players. So, seeing the basketball at her feet, Jinian bent down and picked it up. Smiling sweetly, she said, “Here you go, Senior.”
The boy nodded and gestured for her to throw it.
Jinian stood outside the three-point line, the basketball at her side, and began dribbling. Her eyes swept over the ball.
Realizing what she intended to do, everyone’s gaze instantly shifted to her.
Was she going to attempt a three-pointer? Or was she just putting on a show?
This was the question on many people’s minds. Some, seeing her stance, already felt a surge of excitement.
Truth be told, not only were boys impressive and cool when playing basketball, but girls were too especially someone like Jinian, who stood out brilliantly even when quietly standing in a crowd.
What was even more unexpected was that Shen Jinchu, who had been chatting and laughing with a group of juniors; Feng Zun, who had just stepped out of the teaching building; Su Jiang from the News Department upstairs; Yan Qingge and Nan Shao walking over together; and even Su Mu, who had come to Nost on business all fixed their eyes on her the moment they saw her actions.
Yan Qingge watched Jinian dribbling, and through her, he seemed to see a familiar figure a girl who had once loved basketball passionately. Even when injured, she had insisted on playing in games. He used to not understand what was so enjoyable about basketball, but now he did. Yet, he still didn’t love it, because the process of learning had been unpleasant, and even after mastering it, he found no joy in it.
Because the person he most wanted to know would never care to learn for whom he had taken up basketball.
So, Yan Qingge seemed to be the same as before fastidious, disliking girls but also not entirely the same. At least now he could play basketball well, and last time, even he didn’t understand why he had been willing to take Jinian to the lighting store.
Jinian was far more beautiful than the girl in his heart. She was like Song Jiao the kind of person who always stood out brilliantly in a crowd. In fact, she seemed even more likely to draw people’s attention than Song Jiao.
So, he understood perfectly what Shen Jinchu had once said: with a face like hers, trying to stay low-key would be impossible unless everyone were blind.
Just as Yan Qingge was lost in thought, Jinian curled the corner of his lips and released the basketball from his hand. It traced a beautiful arc as it flew toward the hoop, with everyone’s gaze following its trajectory…
